WATER-FILTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,409, dated December 15, 1896.

To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that we, JOHN A. I-IAsENrELUe. and EzEA W. HASENPFLUG, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tater-Filters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to water-filters; and the invention consists in a water-filter constructed substantially as described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of our improved filter; and Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional elevation thereof, enlarged.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, A represents the casing of the filter, which is usually nickelplated on its exterior or otherwise handsomely finished, so as to make it ornamental as well as useful.

B is the filtering-tube. This tube may be of any Well-known kind, but preferably it is developed from solid stone by boring and finishing and is open at the top and has an opening at its bottom of suiiicient size for the passage of the supporting and binding screw-rod C. This rod has a flange 2 at its bottom, (shown in this instance to be nearly large enough to cover the end of the tube,) and a packing-ring 3 is introduced between the said fiange and the tube to make the joint between them water-tight. In this instance the said rod C has a head i within the flange 2 and extending somewhat into the end of the tube B, but, if preferred, the head 4. might be omitted and the hole through the end of the tube be made just large enough to accommodate rod C.

At its upper end the casin g or shell A has an annular inside ange or seat 5, upon Which the tube is supported by means of the rod C and the plate D. The said plate or disk D is of a size to rest all around upon the seat 5, and packing 6 is introduced between this rest and the said disk and between the tube B and the disk. The bolt C passes through the center of the plate or disk D and is secured thereon by the nut S outside the disk. A small bail-shaped handle 9 is fixed to the nut 8 and is convenient to be grasped to remove and replace the filter-tube. Over all is placed a dome-shaped cap or cover E, resting upon suitable packing 10 about its edge on the plate D and secured in position by the yoke G, having its extremities engaging lugs 12 at each side of the casing, and a hand-screw 14 through the yoke bearing upon the center of the cap E serves to fix the said cap 4rmly upon the casing, The tube B is thus suspended within the casing A with the Waterspace all around it and at its bottom, and water is admitted into said space through an inlet-pipe 15 and Withdrawn therefrom, when necessary, through the cock 16. The plate or disk D has one or more holes or passages 18, through which the filtered Water escapes into the space above the same, beneath the cap E, and a faucet or outlet 2O is secured in the said cap. Hence, to remove the filteringtube for cleansing, as is frequently necessary in all filters of this general character, we have simply to detach the yoke G and lift off the cap E and then take out the tube B. All of these parts are constructed with especial reference to simplicity and convenience, so that any one who has to handle the filter from day to day will have the least possible trouble in doing so.

It is the work of a moment only to take a filtering-tube out or to replace it with this construction, and only three parts are to be handled-the yoke, the cap E, and the tube itself, with the disk D fixed thereto by the screw-rod C.

What we .claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
