UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB G. LANDES, OF NORRISTOVVN, PENNSYLVANIA.
MEANS FOR UNLOCKING NUT-LOCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,337, dated December 15, 1896.
Application filed March 11, 1896. Serial No. 582,725. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB G. LANDES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norristown, in the county of Montgomeryand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Unlocking Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in means for unlocking nutlocks, and has for its object to supply an implement which will so operate a nut-lock of the construction shown in the drawings as to allow the nut which is locked thereby to be readily backed off as easily as though no lock had been used.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation in dotail, referring by letter to the accompanying; drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which-- I Figure 1 is a perspective of the meeting ends of the two railroad-rails, having my improvement applied thereto, one of the locks being unlocked by my improved implement; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof, a portion of the rail-tread being broken away, so as to fully show the operation of the unlocker.
Similar letters denote like parts in all the views of the drawings.
My improvement is to be used on the Wellknown class of nut-locks formed by cutting slots D in a strip of sheet metal A and bending in the manner shown to form an engagement for the side of a nut E,which is threaded on a bolt 0, that passes through a hole 13, formed in plate A, or any other class adapted to be unlocked by passing a member thereof out of its normal position against strong sprn g action.
G is a bar having formed therewith the hook II and also the hook I, which latter is provided with a nose J. These hooks are adapted to engage the tread of the rail, so as to bring the nose J into contact with one of the locks D.
Pivoted to the bar Gis a lever K, the outer end of which serves as a handle, and the inner end has a cam which is adapted to bear against the outer end of the plate-spring L, the opposite end of which is secured by rivets or otherwise to the bar G. To unlock the nut with this device, the hooks are engaged with the tread of the rail and the nose so placed relative to the lock D that when pressure is brought to bear upon said nose by means of the lever K being swung from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 the lock will be depressed into alinement with the body of the washer-plate A, thus leaving the end free to be turned backward, and as this operation can be accomplished in a short space of time and with but little or no effort upon the part of the operator it will be obvious that for use in railroad repairs it is of great importance.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is-- 1. In a device of the character described, a rod, two hooks secured thereon, a cam-lever pivoted to the rod, and a spring secured to the rod and adapted to form a bearingsurface for the cam-lever, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the character described, arod, two hooks secured thereon, a nose formed on one of said hooks, a cam-lever pivoted to the rod, and a spring secured to the rod and adapted to form a bearing-surface for the cam-lever, as and for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the character described, a rod, a hook secured on one end thereof, a second hook having a curved nose attached to the rod, a lever having a cam end pivoted in the other end of the rod and a spring attached to the rod and extending beneath the cam end of the lever, as and for the purpose described. 7
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
.inoon e. LANDES.
