MATCH-IGNITING AND ClGAR-CUTTING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,942, dated December 8, 1896.

of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Igniting and Cigar-Cutting Devices; and I do declare the.

following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in match-igniting and cigar-cutting devices; and it consists ot' the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

located the shallow trough 7, to which is attached the curved arm S, engaging a slot 15, formed in the thumb-lever 15. The trough 7 protrudes through apertures in the end of the casing, whereby it is adapted to make a partial rotation as the thumb-lemris pressed. This trough is adapted to hold a single match only, and as it makes the partial turn the match is dropped into the auxiliary receptacle (ic below, in which operates a reciprocating plunger 9, whose function is to thrust the match partly out of the receptacle as the thumb-lever is pressed.

One end of the auxiliary receptacle GC is apertured, as shown at 10, to receive the plunger 9, while its opposite end is apertured, as shown at 12, (see Fig. 3,) to allow the match to escape. At the exit-aperture 12 two jaws tacle. The jaw 13 is stationary and provided with igniting-points 13% The jaw 14 is yielding and may be called a spring-jaw. Its tension is sui'iicient to cause the match to ignite as it is drawn thro ugh between the jaws.

The thumb-lever 15 is pivoted or fulcrumed at 16 on the side of the match-receptacle opposite the curved side. Gf. On the pivoted end of the lever-15 is formed a disk 15", having a projection 1d and two projections 15h. The lever is normally held at its upward limit of movement by a spring 17, one extremity ot which engages a stop 1S, fast on the matchreceptacle, while its opposite extremity bears against a pin 19, fast on the disk 15.

Above the disk of the thumb-lever, and attached to the match-receptacle, is a horizontal plate 18, apertured to receive cigar ends. Movably attached to the plate, and engaging guideways 18L thereon, is the reciprocating cutter 20, apertured to coincide with the apertures in the plate 1S when the latter is in the normal position. Attached to the cutter 20 are two depending projections 20m, which engage the projection 15d of the lever 15.

A lever 21 is fulcrumed at 22 on the matchreceptacle below the fulcrum 1G of the thumblever. One arm of the lever engages the projections 15h of the thumb-lever, while the opposite extremity of the arm is pivotally connected with an arm 9 of the plunger 9.

13 and 14 are attached to the auxiliary recep- IOO The thumb-lever 15 is attached to the matchreceptacle exteriorly. Attached to this receptacle interiorly, and located opposite the curved side 6, is the plate 23, hinged on a pin 24 and provided with a spring 25, made fast to the plate at one extremity, while its opposite extremityprojects between the hinge-pin and the side of the receptacle. To the hinged plate 23 is attached a beveled or inclined cam 2G, protruding through a slot 27, formed in the side of the receptacle. This cam lies in the path of the thumb-lever 15 as it is depressed or moved downward in the performance of its function. The lever 15 protrudes through a slot 5, formed in the end of the casing 5. The hinged lid 5 of the casing is provided with apertures 5%', registering with the apertures in the top plate 18.

The function of the hinged plate 23 is to raise the matches in the receptacle G every time the thumb-lever is depressed, and thus insure the dropping of the matches into the trough 7 in a horizontal position.

Preparatory to using the device the hinged lid 5 of the casing is raised and a quantity of matches placed in the receptacle 6 with their heads or the ends to be ignited placed toward the right, (referring t0 Fig. 1.) rlhe lid 5 is then closed and the device is ready foruse. The thumb-lever 15 is then depressed and the trough given a partial turn through the agency of the curved arm l8 engaging the slot 15 in the thumb-lever. As the trough is turned the match which it holds is dropped into the auxiliary receptacle 60 and into the path of the plunger 9, which is simultaneously thrust forward or toward the left (see Fig. 1) through the instrumentality of the lever 21; connected with the thumb-lever as aforesaid. The plunger 9 engages the head of the match and forces its opposite extremity through the igniting-

13 and 14 and causes it to protrude far enough to be grasped by the thumb and finger and pulled out. As the match is drawn lthrough the jaws its head is brought in contact with the points 13 vand ignited. As the lever 15 is actuated the knife 2O is also thrust forward, or toward the left, (referring to Fig. 1,) by virtue of the construction heretofore described.

Assuming that the end of a cigar is inserted in the registering apertures of the lid 5, the plate 1S, and the reciprocating knife, the said cigar end will be severed by the knife.

As the trough, the knife, and the plunger are actuated the hinged plate 23 is moved inwardly and the matches slightly raised in the receptacle by virtueof the engagement of the lever 15 with the cam 2G of the hinged plate. As the lever 15 is released it is `raised to its upward limitof movement 'by the spring 17, and all the parts, actuated as aforesaid, are returned to their normal position by virtue of the construction, arrangement, and connections heretofore described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a suitable casing, of the match-receptacle, the trough located in the bottom of said receptacle and journaled in the ends thereof, an auxiliary receptacle below said trough and forming a continuation of the main receptacle, a plunger connected with the auxiliary receptacle and adapted to reciprocate therein, the ignitingjaws attached to said receptacle, and in line with the plunger, a spring-held thumb-lever pivoted to the match-receptacle, the trough being provided with a curved arm engaging an aperture in the thumb-lever, a suitable Aconnection between said lever andthe plu-nger, whereby as the lever is operated, the plunger is actuated, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a suitable casing, of the match-receptacle attached thereto, a trough located in the bottom of said receptacle and journaled in the ends thereof, an auxiliary receptacle located belowsaid trough, a plunger connected with the auxiliary receptacle and adapted to reciprocate therein, ignitingjaws attached to the auxiliary receptacle and in line with the plunger, the spring-held thumb-lever pivoted on the match-receptacle, a spring-held plate hinged to the receptacle and interiorly located, said plate 'being` provided with a cam projecting through a slot in one side Of the receptacle and occupying a position in the path of the thumb-lever, and a suitable connection between the thumb-la ver and the trough and plunger, substantially as described.

3. In a device of the character described, the combinationwith thecasing, of the matchreceptacle attached thereto, a trough located in the bottom of said receptacle and pivoted in the interior thereof, an auxiliary receptacle located below said trough, a reciprocating plunger connected with the auxiliary receptacle, igniting-jaws attached to the receptacle and located in line with the plunger, the spring-held thumb-lever pivoted on the receptacle exteriorly, a spring-held plate hinged to the receptacle and interiorly located, said plate being provided with a cam located in the path of the thumb-lever, a reciprocating knife attached to an apertured plate connected with the top of the match-receptacle, and a suitable connection between the thumblever and the knife, the trough and the plunger, whereby as said lever is operated said elements are actuated, substantially as described.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a suitable casing, of the match-receptacle attached thereto and provided with an apertured extension-plate at the top, a knife movably attached to said plate, a'spring-held thumbfllever pivoted on IOC IIO

the receptacle and exterorly located, a trough pivoted in the bottom of the receptacle and havin g a curved arm engaging an aperture in the thumb-lever, an auxiliary receptacle located below the main receptacle, a reciprocating plunger attached to the auxiliary receptaele, igniting-jaws attached to said receptacle in line with the plunger, and a suitable Connection between the thumb lever, the

knife and the plunger, whereby as the lever 1o is operated, the said elements are actuated, substantially as described.
