GEORGE B. IIOAK, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-FENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,753, dated December 8, 1896.
Application filed May 20, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HOAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Oar-Fenders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Y
My invention relates to improvements in and operating safety-fenders for cars, a description of which will be fully shown and described in the accompanying drawings and specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improvements attached to a car. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same attached to the car.
Similar figures refer to similar parts in the views shown.
To put my improvements into practice in connection with the car 10, I providea hand-' lever 9, having the usual ratchet-and-pawl mechanism connected therewith, as shown,
for securingthe same in position. A rod 11 is secured in a suitable manner to the said ets 7 beneath the car. The cams 8 are securely fastened to the ends of the said rod. The levers 3 are pivoted to thebrackets 6 by the pins or rod 5 and are secured together at one end by the-rod 12. The opposite ends are hinged to the bar 2 by the pins 4, as shown. Securely attached to the said bar 2 is the fen- Serial No. 592,334. (No model.)
l-der l, and when in use is in the position shown a short distance above the track.
The fender may be dropped level with the ground, if desired, by pullin g the hand-lever 9 forward, and the cams 8 allow the lever 3 and the fender 1 to assume the position shown by dotted lines.
In case a person is struck and knocked down the body falls upon the fender and the lever is pulled back, which throws the fender into the position shown at l, rolling the body or person on the fender forward toward the car, and it may be easily removed without injury.
when not in use, the fender may be raised up in the position shown against the dashboard of the car.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a car-fender, the combination of the levers horizontally hung under the car-platform and connected together at their inner or rear ends, the cross-bar hinged to the forward ends of said levers and having secured thereto the fender proper, the cross-rod also hung upon the under side of said car-platform and carrying fixed cams bearing upon the said levers, and the hand-lever secured to said cross-rod and provided with a pawl in engagement with a rack secured to said car-platform, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. HOAK.
