IMPROVEMENT IN FILTER-PRESSES.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,265, (lated August 14,1866.
l To all trimm it may concern extending over the ribs d, and above and be- Be it known that I, L. P. R. DE MASSY, of low, beyond the perforations in the same.
Paris, France, have invented certain Improvements in Filtering-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accom panying` drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement on the iiltering-press for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me on the 21st day of November, 1865; and my invention consists of a iiltering-press constructed, as fully described hereinafter, so that an increased filtering-surface may be obtained without increasing the size of the apparatus.
In order to enable others Skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
0n reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot` this speciiication, Figure l 1s a sectional elevation of my improved ltering-press; Fig. 2, a section on the line l 2, Fig. l 5 Fig. 3, a detached sectional view drawn to an enlarged scale; and Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are views illustrating modiiications of parts of the apparatus.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is a cylindrical metal casing secured to a plate, B, and in the center of the latter is an opening', below which is an annular reservoir or tank, C. To the top of the casing is tted a capLD, an annular projection, a, at the under side of which ts into an annular recess in the top of the casing and bears upon a strip of rubber or other suitable packing in the said recess. To the casing, near the upper end of the same, are hun g arms E, set'screws l), which turn in the upper ends of said arms, bearing on the top ofthe cap D, and to the latter is secured the upper end of a hollow cylinder, F, an annular plate, c, at the lower end of which iits freely into an opening in the lower end of the casin g A. On the inside of the casing A are arranged vertically, and parallel to each other, a number of hollow perforated ribs, d, of the form Shown in Fig. 2, the lower ends of these ribs projecting into the tank C. The casing A is lined with gauze or wire-cloth c, this lining Round the outside of the cylinder F is a covering ot' gauze or wire-cloth, G, which bears against projections t' on the outside of the cylinder, so that there is a narrow chamber or space, x, between the two, and with this space communicates an opening, 7c, in the lower end of the cylinder. The gauze-covered cylinder is inclosed within an elastic bag, H; of gumelastic or other suitable material, the upper edge of this bag being confined between the top of the cylinder and the cap D, and the lower edge between the lower end of the cylinder and the annular plate c. A gum-elastic washer, m., and a thin metal washer, a, are also conined between the plate o and thelower end of the cylinder F, so as to protect the lower end of the bag from abrasion, the metal washer a serving also as a packing to efectually close the opening between the annular plate c and the casing A. To lugs at the inside of the cylinder F are secured chains I, by means of which the cylinder can be elevated clear of the casing A.
Over the circular opening in the tank C fits a conical cap, G', of gum-elastic, to the center otl which is secured one endof a cord, y, the other end of which is attached to a hook on A the inside of the cylinder, near the upper end of the same.
The material to be pressed and filtered is introduced into the space between the casing A and the bag H, and water or other fluid is forced through the opening 7tand chamber m into the bag H, so as to distend the same, and thus force the material against the inner side of the outer casing, A. As the material is being thus compressed the liquid portion will be forced through the wire-clothe and the perforations in the ribs d into the interiors of the latter and downward into the tank C, any liquor which may escape into the interior of the cylinder F falling onto the inclined top of the cover C', which directs it into the tank.
In place of hollow ribsd, solid tluted projections or ribs may be formed on the inside of the casing A, as shown in Fig. 4; or rods or bars, either plain or tinted on the outside, may be secured adjacent to the inner side of the casing and covered with the gauze, as
shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, the object, in all cases, being to form corrugations on the inner face of the casing, and thus increase the ltering-surface and the capacity of the ilter Without increasing the size of the latter.
Detachable tubes or rods and a ganze lining may be arranged Within presses of the ordinary construction, and the capacity of the same may thus be increased at a compara-- tively slight cost.
When plain ribs or bars are used the interstiees between them and the gauze which covers them will aii'ord channels for the liquor to flow into the tank.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters .Patent- A filter-press having a corrugated surface covered with Wire cloth or gauze, against which the material from which the liquor is to be eX-.
tracted is pressed, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing Witnesses.
P. ROBERT DE MASSY.
