EYEG LASS NOSE-GUARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,306, dated December 1, 1896.

To @ZZ whom it may con/@erm Be it known that I, EMIL B. MEYEOWITZ, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Ridgefield, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Eyeglass Nose-Guards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for adapting eyeglasses to be fitted to noses of different sizes and shapes Vby means of the opticians pliers.

It consists, primarily, in eyeglass noseguards of a novel construction in which the nose-pieces of the guards are individually adj ustable edgewise upon a pivot at or near the middle of each nose-piece by bending certain pliable arms of their metallic connections for setting the nose-pieces parallel with the plane of the lenses or at any required angle relative to such plane.

The invention further consists in a specific form of such nose-guards in which the nosepieces comprise back plates of pliable metal,

' and single pliable arms extend downwardly to or toward the lower ends of the nose-pieces,

whereby bending the nose-pieces to insure an effective hold between the eyes is facilitated.

A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.

Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a pair of eyeglasses having noseguards constructed according to the present invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation on a larger scale of the pair of nose-guards shown in Fig. l, illustrating by full and dotted lines the adjustment of the nose-pieces. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the three main parts of one of the nose-guards, disconnected and Figs. 4 and 5 are elevations of nose-guards, illustrating modifications.

A pair A B of the present nose-guards are intended to be combined with a pair of eyeglass-lenses C and a spring or springs D of any kind by means of posts E common to all, as in Fig. l, or in any known or improved manner.

To permit this operation, each adjusting-arm is preferably formed with a curve, (shown at 3' in Fig. 3,) which is equivalent to an incipient bend and renders the effective length of the adj Listing-arm greater than the distance between the pivot c and the rivet CZ, which is essential to such adjustment. At the intersection of the arms l and 2 each metallic connection is provided with a hole 4, Fig. 3, to receive its pivotal rivet c. The arm lis provided with a hole 5 to receive an attachingscrew F, Fig. l, in customary manner, and the extremity of the adj listing-arm 2 is provided with a hole 6 to receive its rivet d.

In the specific construction represented by Figs. l, 2, and 3 each nose-piece a is further constructed in two parts, comprising a backplate 7, Fig. 3, of pliable metal, in connection with the nose-piece proper, (represented at 8 in Fig. 3, of horn, celluloid, or the like,) and each metallic connection b has a single adj usting-arm 2, which extends downwardly to or toward the lower end of the nose-piece, leaving the upper end of the nose-piece clear, as in Figs. 1 and 2, so that it may be bent, with the aid of said back plate 7, to insure a secure hold of the nose-guards between the eyes.

nose-pieces are furthermore preferably widened and rounded to render such hold between the eyes comfortable. Said parts 7 and 8 of the nose-pieces are united with each other by said rivets c and d, together with a supplemental rivet e at the upper end of each nose-piece.

In the modified nose-guard represented by Fig. 5 the metallic connection b has'a pair of said adjusting-arms 2, extending in both directions from the pivotal rivet c to a pair of rivets d at the respective extremities of the nose-piece a.

Other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.

I do not claim herein, broadly, an eyeglass nose-guard comprising two parts united with each other by rivets, one of which forms a pivot, one of the parts having an adjustingarm which is pliable edgewise between said rivets to adj ust` the noseguard and is of greater effective length than the distance between such rivets to permit such adjustment, but I claim the same in a companion specification forming part of my application for patent for improvement in eyeglass noseguards, iil'ed February 14, 1896, Serial No. 579,194. The specific nose-guards shown and described in the drawings and specification forming part of said application, Serial No. 579,194, differ from those species which form the subject-matter of the present specification as to the location of the pivotal rivet, which has an important effect in the operation of the nose-guards. The-pivot at or near the middle of the nose-piece which distinguishes the present species affords a central point from which adjustments are most easily accomplished. It facilitates, for example, adjusting a nose-piece as to angle without moving it backward or forward, andit leaves the ends of the nose-pieces free to be bent toward or away from each other ywithout interfering with the action of the pivot.

Having thus described the said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification- 1. An eyeglass nose-guard comprising a nose-piece adjustable edgewise upon a pivot at or near its middle, and a metallic connection having an attaching-arm and an adjusting-arm in one part and united with said nosepiece by said pivot at the intersection of said arms, said adjusting-arm being further attached to the nose-piece by a rivet at its eX- tremity, and being pliable edgewise to adjust the nose-piece and of greater effective length than the distance between said pivot and said rivet to permit such adjustment,substantially as hereinbefore specied.

2. An eyeglass nose guard comprising a nose-piece having a back plate of pliable metal attached thereto, a metallic connection having an attaching-arm and an adjustingarm, a pivot at the intersection of said arms uniting said nose-piece at or near its middle with said metallic connection, and a rivet attaching said adjusting-arm to said nosepiece at or near its lower end, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
