UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERCY G. WILLIAMS, OF BROOKLYN,NE\V YORK.
MAZE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,142, dated December 1, 1896.
Application filed April 8, 1896. Serial No. 586,702. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PERCY G. WILLIAMS, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mazes or Labyrinths, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a labyrinth or maze designed for purposes of amusement; and it consists of the improvements which are fully set forth in the following specification and are shown in the accompanying drawings.
It is the object of the invention to afford amusement by means of a labyrinth of chambers or inclosures through which a person must pass in order to reach an exit.
The invention is especially designed for embodiment in a building, and comprises a general system of disposition of rooms and also the placing of a multiplicity of doors in such rooms, whereby the route from the entrance to the exit will be rendered difiicult to follow.
In the drawings I have illustrated the labyrinth as embodied in a building.
Figure l is a plan view of the same, showing the path from entrance to exit in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevational view taken on the line so a: of Fig. 1. 1
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the views.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A A are rooms arranged adjacent to each other to form a series and provided with any number of doors 13, some of which open into an adjoining room, some upon blank walls, as. O, I
and still others on cupboards D, in which may be concealed a wax figure or the like.
When a door opens on a blank wall, I generally print some catch phrase or paint some grotesque or ludicrous figure emphasizing the mistake made by the person opening the door in expecting to find a passage.
There the rooms connect, I provide double doors arranged to swing into the room in which they are hinged, so that it is impossible to discover whether any given door opens on a blank wall, a cupboard, or upon a door opening into another room.
\Vhat I claim as new is- 1. A maze or labyrinth consisting of chambers or inclosures, each chamber or inclosure being provided with a plurality of doors some of which open on blank walls and others communicatingwith adjacent chambers, substantially as described.
2. Amaze or labyrinth consisting of a series of chambers or inclosures, cupboards communicating with the chambers, a plurality of doors in each, chamber or inclosure some of which open on blank walls, some on cupboards, and others into adjacent chambers or inclosures and communicating openings between said chambers orinclosures provided with double doors, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PERCY G. WILLIAMS.
