Be it known that I, JQHN SCHADE, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Skates; and l do. declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.

This invention has relation to roller-skates and is designed to provide a new and improved construction thereof whereby the skates maybe readily adjusted to diiferent lengths; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating one of my improved skates, the letters A. and B designate, respectively, the toe and heel portions or plates of which the body of the skate consist-s. The heel portion is formed with a narrow elongated forward extension l), which forms a continuation of a broad groove or depression if, formed in the heel portion proper. In this tongue and depressed portion is a narrow elongated continuous slot U3. The toe plate or portion Alias a similar rearward extension o, which is arranged'to slide in the depression l). Formed on the under side of the extension a is an elongated longitudinal rib or flange a', which tion of said rib or flange is a rivet or like fastening O, having upon the under side a head e of greater diameter than the width of the slot if, whereby it serves t-o prevent vertical separation of the part-s.

through a seat at the forward end of the rib a is a screw I), having a large head d at the upper side and secured at the under side by a nut E, which when screwed up bears against the under side of the end portion of said rib or flange, and also upon the under side of the extension l). This nut being loosened, it will be seen that the two extensions may be moved upon each other to secure the desired adjustment as to length and that when said nut is tightened the two portions will be firmly secured to each other, the engagement of the extension a with the dcpression b serving to prevent any lateral movement of the parts with relation to each other. The thickness of the extension a is equal to the depth of the said depression, whereby it seats flush therein. The extension i) will slide freely between the arms of the bifurcated or slotted front roller-truck, which is secured to the toe portion in any suitable manner.

The two portions A and B can be readily stamped from blanks of metal, by which operation the depression b and the rib or flange a may be formed, this enabling the skate to be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.

In Figs. ai and 5 I have shown a modiiic-ation of the construction, which is simply a reversal of the construction first described. That is to say, the depression 71, which corresponds to the depression b', and the slot h are formed in the toe portion or plate, while the rib or flange l', which corresponds to the part a' irst described, is formed upon the extension of the heel plate or portion which slides upon the extension of the toe plate or portion; otherwise the construction is the saine as that first described.

I do not desire toclaim, broadly, herein, Aper se, a means for adjustment, as to length, consisting of two ov-'erlying parts with means for securing them in di li'erent positions, as I ain aware that such adjustments are old, In so far as I am aware, however, the herein-described means ot' adjustment, and particularly when embodied in a skate wherein one of the overlapping parts is slotted and the other has an elongated rib which enga ges such slot wit-l 1 securing devices, is new.

l Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. An extensible skate-body, comprising a heel plate or portion, and a toe plate or portion, said plates or portions having overlapping extensions, one of said extensions having an elongated longitudinal groove therein, and the other a rib or flange, which slidably engages said groove, together with means forsecuring said portions in the proper adjustment, and for preventing vertical separation thereof substantially as specified.

2. In an extensible skate, the combination with a heel portion having a forward extension, of a toe portion having a similar but rear# Ward extension, said extensions being overlapped, and having one a longitudinal slot therein, and the other an elongated rib or 'flange which engages said slot, the end portion of the uppermost extension also engaging a. depression formed in the other of said portions, together With means for securing the two portions in proper adjustment, and for preventing vertical separation thereof substantially as specified.

3. In an extensible skate, the combination with a heel portion having a broad longitudinal depression in its upper surface, and having also an extension forming a continuation of this depressed portion, said depressed portion and extension having a continu ous lon gitudinal slot therein, of a toe plate or portion having an extension which overlies the extension of -the heel portion and also engages the said depression, and Which has an elongated longitudinal rib or flan ge thereon which slidably engages the said slot,together with means for securing the adjustment of said portions, substantially as specied.

In an extensible skate, the combination With a heel portion B, having the extension i), the depression b and slot b2, of the toe portion A having the extension a Which overlies the extension I) and which has an elongated rib or flange a Which slidably engages the said slot, together with the rivet C, or like fastening, and the screw D, having the nut E, substantially as specied.
