T0 aZZ wh0m it mag aoncarn:
Be it known that we, OTTO JAHNSEN, a subject of the Ring 0f Denmark, 2u1d GOTTFRIED MEINHARDT, a, eitizen of the United States, residing a1; New York, in 13116 county zu1d State 0f New York, have invented a new zmd usefn1 Improvement in Oarving-l\lachines, 0f whic-.h the following is 21 specification.
Our invenion relates 130 maehines for carving ornzunents in wood zmd analogous soft nmeria'ls for decomtive purposes.
I-Ieretofore ea-rving-maohines hzwe been employed wherein several ornaments WBIG simultianeously carved in one machine fron1 a pattern which had previously been carved by hau d. In these machines the patern and blocks t0 be carved wem placed 011 parallel shelves one above anoher, and the tracingpoint and cm:ving-tools were in line and upon arms conneced 130 a eommon nwvable support, so that all the arms could be simultaneously moved vertiea1ly and horizontally and swung in unison. These patterns were all alike, and when 1:11e opposite pattern was desired to form with 1ahe firs pabtern an opposite to make a pair it herebofore has been usual 110 carve Shis opposite pattern by hauc1 and thereafter 110 reproduce therefrom ehe duplicate patterns in the aforesaid duplicat- 111g earving-maehine.
0111 invention relates especiallyto amachine E01: formin g the opposite pattern t0 sonstitute with he one traced from a pair, so that the handlabor heretofore employed becomes unnecessary and an opposite patern is produced which exaetly agrees in out1ine anal in position 0f ornamentation with the one tracecl from, so thateaeh pattern 0f the pa-ir is perfecc.
In carrying out 0111 invention the pattern t0 be traced from is secured to ohe under side of a she1f, and the block t0 be earved as the opposite thereto is p1aced on the upper surface of a shelf wit-hin the same vertical lines, and in epnnection Wih a revolving carving- 15001 and means f01 rotating the same, such as has heretofore usually been employed, we make use 01: a verbieally-moving arm and a, bracket-frame 1igid1y fixed to the swinging frame and hzwing a head and bars moving vertically therein und a centrally-pivoted lever 2u1d links eonnected o0 said bars and lever. One 0f these bars is connected t0 ehe vertically-moving arm, and the upper end of 13110 other bar is pr0vided With a tracer 130 be moved around in the. pattern upon he under side 0f the upper she1f. the omeer is eonnected is in the szune vertical axia1 1ine with alle carving-tool, and in the operation 0f the mechanism, as the carvingt001 is moved downward by haud, the arm carryiug said t0ol is also moved downward zu1d the bars and pivoted lever am aetuated to m0ve the tracer upwmfl int0 the pattern, it being impossible to move the oarving-tool down amy fa1ther tlmn the tracer Will enter the patte1n, so that in all cases the carving t-001 accs 130 a depth agreeing With the depth of the overhead pattern. Tl1e \-'ertically-moving arm und fixed bracke-fmme carrying the mechanism am 001111 ected t0 a swinging frame, so tha the parts can be moved over the face of Ehe pattern t0 any d esired osition f01 prop- Sr1y working out Ehe, pattern, so thm; the strip carved is made 110 ag1ee wioh the pat tern except that the one is the exact opposite 0f the other.
In the dmwings, Figure 1 is an elevation and partial section representing 0111 improvemen's, and Fig. 2 is a, p1an and seetion ab am; 0f Fig. l with the bmokeb d and rod h removed.
The vertieal member A and swinging frame B ame, well-known parts of the usual duplioating carving-machine zu1d (10 110i; require furbhe1 description. The frame O is pivoted by bo1ts 1 so the frame B and is thereby adapted 110 swing 011 said f12utne, While the fmme B may also swing upon the member A.
'lhe frame Ocomprisesa verfiiczfl plante With grooved slideways 2 3 upon eaeh side thereof and ab the top and bottom 2u1(1 edge s1ideways 4: 5 also at the top and bottom, and t-0 the edge face 0f this frzune O the bmeketframe D is seeured, and said brackeu-frame is provied With the head D, adj ustably 0011- nected thereco by the bolts G.
The carving-tool a is upon a spindle having bearings in ohe 110110W ball a, and the same is roated by be1ts b and a pulley b in the usual manner. The frame c (shown in plzm, Fig. 2) czu-ries the 110110W ba11 a {und The bar to whieh Signed by us this 29th day 0f January, A. D. 1896.
