SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,421, dated November 17, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mom mouth, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Walking Ground Plows, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the handle of such plows, and the means for attaching the handles to the plow. As is well known, handles of walking ground-plows have heretofore been made almost exclusively of wood, and have been beveled, bent, and otherwise shaped so as to fit the share, moldboard, and landside, and other parts of the plow to which they were bolted. The right and left handles have been of different shape, and therefore not interchangeable on the same plow or on the same style of plow, and the handles of plows of different styles have also been so different as not to be interchangeable. Further, it has been necessary to fit each handle to its plow and to bolt the same in place separately, and this has required skilled operatives, so that it is customary to fit the handles in the fac-' tory and to ship the plows with the handles in place, whereby there is great loss of space in cars or other vehicles in which such plows are transported.

The object of my invention is to provide a plow-handle of novel construction and shape,

and to provide a plow of novel construction adapted to the attachment of such improved handles and to use with such improved handles attached.

A further object is to provide novel means of attaching plow-handles to plows, so as to permit the use of the same handle interchangeably on the right or left side, or on other plows without special shaping or fitting of such handle.

I attain these objects by the means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein the same character of reference refers to the same part in the several Views.

In the drawings, B represents the beam, S the share, S the moldboard, and L the land side of the plow, these parts differing in no Way from the construction usual in plows of this class.

II II are the handles, preferably constructed of steel tubing. These are of uniform shape and size in cross-section throughout, and are perfectly straight, except for the usual downward bend at the upper rear end for the convenience of the operator.

Between the lower portion of the share and the landside extends the socket-plate d, serving the double purpose of a brace and means for attaching the handles rigidly to the plow. The socket-plate d has extensions 75 on the landside and share ends, respectively, adapting it to be firmly bolted to the landside at one end and to the moldboard and share on the other. The moldboard is also braced to the beam by the brace hin the usual manner.

The clamp-plate c has corresponding recesses or sockets, and is adapted to fit over the handles in place in, or rather on, their sockets in the socket-plate and to hold them firmly in place when secured by the bolt 6.

The handles H H are braced from the beam by the braces 12 b, and. are braced apart by the brace b in the usual manner.

WVhen it is decided to remove a handle, all that is necessary is to remove the braces, un screw the nut from the bolt 6, and so remove the clamp plate o. It is obvious that the handles can be removed and inserted, in the manner described, by any unskilled operative.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
