LAPPET-LOOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 570,791, dated November 3, 1896.

To ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GALLOWAY, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Mellor, Blackburn, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lappet-Looms, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain under date of March 7, 1895, No. 4,833,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanism used in connection With looms when weaving what are known as lappets, the object being to construct such lappet-motions that the pattern or design can be changed more readily and economically than heretofore, so that various patterns or dcsigns can be produced without changing the pattern-barrel, but by merely altering the lattice on same.
The invention consists in the employment of an ordinary pattern-barrel and lattice in combination with mechanism for operating the same, and tumbler-levers or fallers connected to the usual needle-bars of the lappetmotion, such fallers being operated by cranked levers and connections from the slay or by means of a dobby. v
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of so much of the back part of a loom as is requisite to illustrate the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line AB of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a part of Fig. 1, showing the patternbarrel and appliances for operating same; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of part of Fig. 1.
According to this invention I mount in a bracket 1 on one of the slay-swords 2 a patternbarrel 3, on which is an ordinary lattice 4, such lattice being carried also by a barrel 36, adjustably held in the slot 37 of the bracket 1. On the same shaft 5 as the barrel 3 is a ratchet-wheel 6. Fixed to the frame 8 of the loom is a bracket 9, carrying a catch or pawl 10, which at each stroke or beat up of the slay 2 as it rocks on the bar 2a' engages with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 6 and moves it round one tooth, and so operates the patternbarrel 3 and the chain or lags 4, carried thereon.
32 32 are springs which bear on the edges of the barrel 3 for the purpose of steadying same and retaining it in the position into which it has been moved. They are carried by the bar 322, aiixed to the slay-sword, and 32b is a spring attached also to the slay-sword and engaging the ratchet 6, to prevent the barrel moving back.
Above the pattern-barrel 3 are a series of fallers or vertical rods 12 12, passing freely through a guide-bar 31, said rods being connected to the bell-crank tumbler-levers 13 13, pivoted at 13a to a bracket 13b, carried by the slay-sword. The other ends of the levers 13 are by links 1-1 connected to the bars 28, which control the needle-bars 15 of the lappet-motion.v The needle-bars 15 carry pins 29 depending from saine and passing through holes in brasses in the bars 28. The bars 28 slide in eyes 28a, carried by the bars 15.
The pins 16 for guiding the shuttle as it crosses the race are fixed in a bar 17, to which a rising-and-fallin g motion is imparted by the rods 18 18, in the lower ends of which are adj ustably secured rollers 19 19, Working in camgrooves in the brackets 2O 20, fixed to crossrails 20 of. the loom. The ends of the vertical rods 18 are guided in slots inbrackets 33, secured to a part of the frame 8. Said rods 18 carry plates 21 21, which serve, as hereinafter set forth, to raise or lower the needlebars 15 of the lappet-motion. The bars 28 are connected by links 26 with one end of a bell-crank lever 22, pivoted on a stud 24 of a bracket 25, xed to the slay-sword 2. The other end of the lever 22 is situated ashort distance off from a fixed projection 11, carried by a part of the frame 8.
The action is as follows: When the loom is in motion, at each beat up of the slay the ratchet-wheel 6 comes into contact with the fixed catch or pawl 10, and the formeris moved a space of one tooth, and the pattern-barrel 3 is also moved, so that the next lag is brought under the vertical rods or fallers 12 12. At the same time the bell-crank lever 22 ,and its links 26, which are all controlled by the slays will have struck the projection 11 and moved the bars 28 to the right, and this will haveV carried the pins 29 29 over and in line with the plates 21 2 1. Whenthe slay. moves back, the springs 27 ,attached to apartof the frame 8 and to the bell-crank levers 13,.;(017 it may be weights,) draw all the bars 2 8 tothe left, unless aY peg occurs in the lattice', yin which IOC case the faller 12 rests on the top of the peg and no movement ofthe bar 15 controlled by this peg takes place. The bar 15 not being moved, the pin 29 in this bar will remain directly over'the lifting cross-plate 21. During the backward movement of the slay the rollers 1E) 19 move up the cam-grooves 20 2O and the rods 1S 18 and cross -plates 2l 21 are raised; consequently the pins 29 29 on such plates 21 21 are also raised, and these in turn lift the needle-bar 15 to which they are fixed.
The lappet threads or Warps 3-12 are passed through the eyes of the needles and are operated in the ordinary and Well-known manner, and the pattern of the lappet can readily and easily be adjusted and changed by changing the positions and lengths of the pegs in the lattice 4.
There may be one, tivo, three, or four needle-bars 15, with a corresponding number of levers 13 and fallers 12. The bar 17 is free to slide up and down in slides 30 30 in the slay-swords 2 2.

In a lappet-motion loom,the combination with the slay-swords, of a pattern carried by one of the said slay-swords, means for operating the pattern, fallers controlled by the said pattern, bell-crank levers With one arm of each connected to the said fallers, bars connected to the other arms of the said bell-crank levers and means for imparting reciprocating motion to the said bars, needle-bars connected to said reciprocating bars, and means for raising and lowering the said needle-bars, substantially as described.
2. In a lappet-motion loom, the combination with the slay-swords, of a pattern carried by one of the said slay-swords, means for operating the pattern, fallers controlled by the said pattern, bell-crank levers With one arm of each connected to the said fallers, bars connected to the other arms of the said bellcrank levers and means for imparting reciprocating motion to the said bars, needle-bars and pins carried thereby, said pins being engaged by the said reciprocating bars, and means for raising and lowering the said pins and needle-bars, substantially as described.
3. In a lappet-motion loom,the combination with the slay-swords, of a patternbarrel carried by one of the said slay-swords, a peglattice carried by the said barrel, means for operating the barrel, fallers controlled by the said pegs, bell-crank levers with one arm of each connected to the said fallers, bars connected to the other arms of the said bell-crank levers an d m eans for imparting reciprocating motion to the said bars, needle-bars and pins carried thereby, said pins being engaged by the said reciprocating bars, and means for raising and lowering the said pins and needlebars, substantially as described.
4. `In a lappet-loom, the combination with the sl ay-swords, of a pattern-barrel carried by one of the said slay-swords, peg-lattice carried by the said barrel, means for revolving the said barrel in one direction and preventing its revolving in the opposite direction, fallers controlled by the pegs of the aforesaid lattice, needle-bars and pins carried there.- by, bell-crank levers with one arm connected to one end of the said fallers, sliding bars engaging the pins of the needle-bars and connected to the other arm of the said bell-crank levers, means for imparting reciprocating motion to the said bars and transmitting the same to the needle-bars, and means for raising and lowering the said needle-bars, substantially as described. j
5. In a lappet-loom, the combination With the slay-swords, of a pattern carried by one of the said slay-swords, fallers controlled by the aforesaid pattern, needle-bars and pins carried thereby, bell-crank levers with one arm connected to one end of the said fallers, sliding bars engaging the pins of the needlebars and connected to the other arm of the said bell-crank levers, means for imparting reciprocating motion to the said bars and transmitting the same to the needle-bars, vertical rods carrying plates over which the pins of the needle-bars may be brought, and means for raising and lowering the said vertical rods and plates, substantially as described.
6. In a lappet-loom, the combination with the slay-swords, of a pattern -barrel carried by one of the said slay-swords, peg-lattice carried by the said barrel, means for revolving the said barrel in one direction and preventing its revolving in the opposite direction, fallers controlled by the pegs of the aforesaid lattice, needle-bars and pins carried thereby, bell-crank levers with one arm connected to one end of the said fallers, sliding bars engaging the pins of the needle-bars and connected to the other arm of the said bell-crank levers, means for imparting reciprocating motion to the said bars and transmitting the same to the needle-bars, vertical rods carrying plates over which the pins of the needlebars may be brought, and means for raising and lowering the said vertical rods and plates, substantially as described.
7. In a lappet-motion loom,the combination with the slay-swords, of a pattern carried by one of the said slay-swords, means for operating said pattern, fallers controlled by the said pattern, the needle-bars and pins carried thereby, means for operating the fallers and shifting the pins of the needle-bars, vertical rods provided with plates over Which the pins of the needle-bars may be brought, and means for raising and lowering the said needle-bars, substantially as described.

of the needle-bars, vertical rods provided with plates over which the pins of the needle-bars may be brought, rollers carried by the said vertical rods and cam-groove brackets mounted on the loom-frame and engaging said rollers, substantially as described.
9. In a lappet-motion loom,the combination with the frame and the slay-swords, of a pattern-barrel carried by one of the said slayswords, a pe g-lattice carried by the said barrel, means for operating said barrel, fallers controlled by the pegs of the said lattice, the needle-bars and pins carried thereby, means for operating the fallers and shifting the pins of the needle-bars,vertical rods provided with plates over which the pins of the needle-bars may be brought,rollers carried by the said vertical rods and cam-groove brackets mounted on the loom-frame and engaging said rollers, substantially as described.
10. In a lappet-motion loom, the combination with the slay-swords, of a bracket carried by 011e of the said slay-swords, adrum carried by said bracket and provided with Va ratchet and pawl, a second drum adj ustably mounted in the said bracket7 a peg-lattice apron passing over both of the said drums, means for operating the said drums, Jfallers controlled by the pegs of the said lattice,bellcrank levers with one arm connected to the said fallers, sliding bars connected to the other end of the said bell-crank levers, means for imparting reciprocating motion to the said bars, needlebars connected to the aforesaid sliding bars and means for raising and lowering the said needle-bars, substantially as described.

In a lappet-motion loom, the combina- 'tion with the slay-swords, of a bracket carried by one of the said slay-swords, a drum carried by said bracket and provided with a ratchet and pawl, a second drum adj ustably mounted in the said bracket, apeg-lattice apron passing over both of the said drums, means for operating the said drums, fallers controlled by the pegs of the said lattice,bellcrank levers with one arm connected to the said fallers, sliding bars connected to the other end of the said bell-crank levers, means for imparting recriprocating motion to the said bars, needlebars and pins carried thereby, the said pins engaging the aforesaid sliding bars, vertical rods with plates over which the pins of the needle-bars may be brought, and means for imparting motion to the said vertical rods and plates, substantially as described.
12. In a lappet-motion loom, the combination with the slayswords and frame, of a bracket carried by one ofthe said slay-swords, a drum carried near one end of said bracket and another drum adjustably mounted near the other end of said bracket, a pattern carried by the said drums, means for operating the said drums, allers controlled by the said pattern, bell-crank levers with one arm connected to the said fallers, sliding bars connected to the other arm of the said bell-crank levers, means for imparting motion to the said sliding bars, the needle-'bars connected to the said sliding bars, vertical rods for raising and lowering said needle-bars, rollers carried by said vertical rods, and cam-grooved brackets mounted on the said loom-frame and engaging said rollers, substantiallyas described. l
13. In a lappet-motion loom, the combination with the slay-swords and frame, of a bracket carried by one of the said slay-swords, a drum carried near one end of said bracket and another drum' adjustably mounted near the other end of said bracket, a pattern passing over the said drums, means for operating the said drums, fallers controlled by the said pattern, bell crank levers with one arm connected to the said fallers, sliding bars connected to the other arm of the said bell-crank levers, means for imparting motion to the said sliding bars, the needle-bars provided with pins extending through the said sliding bars, vertical rods and plates carried by said rods, over which the pins of the needle-bars may be brought, rollers carried by said vertical rods, and cam-grooved brackets mounted on the said loom-frame and engaging the said rollers, substantially as described.

In a lappet-motion loom, the combination with the frame and slay-swords, of a bracket 1 carried by one of the said slays, a pattern-barrel 3 mounted on said bracket, a second barrel 36 also mounted on the said bracket, a peg-lattice 4 carried by the saidV barrels, means for revolving the said barrels, the fallers 12 actuated by said pegs, the bellcrank levers 13 With one arm connected to the said fallers, flexible connection between said levers and the loom-frame, the bars 28 connected to the other arm of the said bell-crank levers, links 26 connected to thesaid bars, the bell-crank lever 22 for operating said links and bars, means for actuating said bell-crank lever 22, the needle-bars 15 and pins 29 carried thereby, and engaging the aforesaid bars 28, vertical rods 18, plates 21 carried by said vertical rods, rollers carried by the said rods, and a cam-grooved bracket 2O engaging the said rollers and carried by the loom-frame,

15. In a mechanism for actuating the needle-bars of a loom, the combination with the said needle-bars, of a vertical rod for actuating the same, a roller carried by said rod, and a cam-grooved bracket engaging said roller, substantially as described.
16. The combination with a loom provided with needle-bars, of vertical rods provided with plates for actuating the needle-bars of said loom, rollers carried by said rods and cam-grooved brackets engaging said rollers, substantially as described.
