(No Model.) E.J.TOOP.
SEWING MACHINE.
No. 570,722. v Patnted Nov. 3, 189 6 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDlVlN J. TOOF, OF NEYV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
SEWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,722, dated November 3, 1896.
Application filed February 3, 1890. Serial No. 339,051. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN J. TOOF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forms the specification.
My present invention relates to that class of loopers which are adapted for use in combination with reciprocating-shuttle sewingmachines in lieu of and interchangeable with the regular shuttle, whereby a chain-stitch may be made in lieu of a lock-stitch; and it consists of additional improvements in the device forming the subject-matter of another application of mine now pending, filed February 3, 1890, Serial No. 339,050, as will hereinafter be set forth in detail, and pointed outv in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of the bed-plate of a sewing-machine with the slideplates removed, showing the wall of the raceway and the shuttle-carrier with a looper embodying my invention supported thereon. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 represent a plan, bottom, and front edge view, respectively, of my improved looper. Fig. 5 represents a plan view of the shuttle-carrier and Fig. 6, an edge view of the looper-shank and the shuttle-carrier, the latter being partly in section, showing the connection between said parts.
To explain in detail, A represents the bed plate of a sewing-machine; B, the presserbar; C, the needle-bar; c, the needle; D, the shuttle carrier or cradle; F, the wall of the raceway, and E my improved looper. This looper, which consists of a supporting-shank 6, provided with an arm 6, connected therewith, having a loop-engaging hook e at one end thereof and aloop-spreading flange e on one side thereof adjacent to the point of said hook, is, in'so far as the elements thus referred to, of the same construction and mode of operation as the device above referred to as forming the subj cot-matter of my application now pending, Serial No.339,050,and not of my.
present invention, which latter, as illustrated in the drawings and as will be described, consists, first, in the means for adjusting the point of the loop-engaging hook in its relation to the path of the needle and the wall of the raceway, and, second, in the means for detachably securing the looper'in the shuttlecarrier in a fixed or rigid operative position.
The arm 6, which carries the loop-engaging hook and loop-spreader, is, according to'this invention, pivotally secured at its rear end thereof to the supporting-shank e, whereby, after the latter has been securedto the carrier D, the forward end of the arm carrying the hook 6 may be movable to adjust the point of the latter in its relation to the path of the needle. This adjustment of the arm is secured in the present instance shown by means of a spring 6 which is secured upon the shank c with one end acting upon a short arm 6 of the arm e, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The action of the spring e upon the arm 6 holds the edge of the flange e which projects laterally beyond the point of the hook 6 in yielding contact with the wall of the race, and thus holds the point of the loop-engaging hook in its proper relative position to the path of the needle, whereby it will enter the loop thrown out by the needle at its downstroke. The edge of the flange 6 being thus held in yielding contact with the wall of the raceway, the thread is allowed to freely pass between said surfaces during the operation of the machine in the formation of stitches,
as well understood by those skilled in the art.
Other means might, however, be employed in lieu of the spring, as shown, for adjusting the arm 6, and be within the scope of my invention.
The supporting-shank e, as a convenient means for detachably securing it in a fixed operative position in the shuttle-carrier, is provided on its under side with a pin or projection 6 extending at an angle therefrom, and with a movable catch 6 both being adapted to enter counterpart openings 6 and c respectively, located in the shuttle-carrier, as more clearly shownin Fig. 5, the catch 6 being adapted to be turned, by means of a connecting-knob located on the upper surface of the shank, to engage with the under surface of the carrier and thus lock the loopershank thereto, and the pin 6 serving,in coinbination with said catch, to lock the shank from lateral and vertical displacement.
Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a sewingm'achin'e, the combination with the vertically-reciprocating needle, the raceway and a horizontally-vibrating carrier, of a looper, consisting of a supporting-shank having means for connection with said carrier, and an arm, provided with a loop-e11- gaging hook and with 'aloop-spreader located adjacent to the end of said hook, movably' connected with said supporting-shank so as to be horizontally movable relative to the latter and the wall of the raceway, and means for holding said arm with its hook in proper operative position relative to the wall of the raceway and the path of the needle, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth. 7
2. In a sewing-machine, the combination with the vertically-reciprocating needle, the raceway and the horizontally-vibrating carrier, of a looper, consisting of a supportingshank having means whereby it may be detachably connected with said carrier in a fixed operative position, an arm, provided with a loop-engaging hook at one end thereof and with a loop-spreader, having a hinged connection with said shank so as to be horizontally movable relative to the latter and the wall of the raceway, and means for holding said hinged arm withits hook in proper operative position relative to the wall of the raceway and the path of the needle, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a reciprocating-shnttle sewing-machine, the combination with the shuttle-carrier having two openings therein, of a looper, adapted to be carried bysaid carrier, provided with a pin or projection extending at an anigle therefrom and with a hook device, both being adapted to extend through said openin gs in the carrier and engage with the latter,
substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
EDWIN J. TOOF.
