UNITED STATES PATENT A OFFICE.
IVILLIAM CONNER SHERMAN, OF ORLANDO, FLORIDA.
FOUNTAIN-PEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,717, dated November 3, 1896. Application led February 20, 1896. Serial No. 580,097. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM CONNER SHER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orlando, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pens, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.l Y
This invention relates to fountainpens; and the object thereof is to combine a syringe with an ordinary fountain-pen, by means of which the ink may be drawn into the fountain or reservoir, and by means of which it may also be forced therefrom, a further object being to provide a device of this class whereby the pen and the tubular head with which it is connected and the fountain or reservoir may be cleaned by the syringe attachment.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specication, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side view; Fior 9 a o- -fa side elevation thereof, showing the cover for the pen in section; and Fig. 3, a transverse section on line .no a; of Fig. l.
In the practice of my invention I provide a tubular reservoir A, in one end of which is mounted the usual tubular penholder B,which is adapted to be connected therewith by means of a screw-thread, as shown at O, and in the outer end of which is placed the pen f D, and the pen D and the holder B are in communication, as will be understood, with the tubular reservoir or holder A, this construction being of the usual form and not shown. The outer end of the reservoir or holder A is also provided with a screw-cap E, and I also provide a sliding cover or casing F, which is open at one end and closed at the other and provided with a tubular extension G, and passing through said tubular extension G is a rod H, on the inner end of which is a piston K, and this device is adapted, as will be understood, to serve as an ordinary syringe.
Secured at or near the outer end of the tubular reservoir of the holder A is a pin a, as shown in Fig. 3, which is adapted to operate in a segmental slot or chamber @2in the sliding cover or casing, with which communicates a longitudinal slot also formed in the casing F, and the object of this segmental slot a2 is to engage the pin a and lock the casing in a closed position, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and that of the longitudinal slot is'to limit the outward movement of the casing F, and I also provide a tubular cap or cover L, which is open at one end and closed at the other, as shown in Fig. 2, and vsaid cap or cover Lis. adapted to serve as a coveringpfor the pen when not in use, and is adapted to be connected with 4the tubular portion B of the I holder or with the extension G of the sliding cover or casing F, and when not in use as a protector or cover .for the pen it is mounted the bottle and the piston K withdrawn or partly withdrawn, together with the sliding cover or casing F, and the operation of the pen will be the same 'as with ordinary pens of this class, and, as will be understood, all the ink may be forced from the reservoir whenever desired by simply forcing the Vpiston K inwardly, and this device may also be employed for the purpose of thoroughly washing out and cleaning the tubular penholder B and the reservoir or holder A Whenever the same becomes necessary. This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and is also comparatively inexpensive.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts as herein shown and described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as l ICC mounted a tubular penholder B, adapted to receive a pen D, the outer end of said reservoir A, being' provided With a screw-threaded cap E to close said end and also having a pin a, projecting from one side thereof adjacent to the cap E, and a sliding cover F providedl with a longitudinal slot extending to near the ends thereof, and one end of which communicates with a segmental slot CL2 said slot being adapted to receive the pin d on the casing A to regulate the movement of the easingr F, said casing being providedrwth a restricted portion G, from which extendsa :rod H which A my invention I have signed my name, in preszo ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of February, 1896.
