Description

' portion containing the eye, substantially as UNITED STATES PATENT" OFFICE.
JOSEF ZIMMERMANN, OF AACHEN, GERMANY.
NEEDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,590, dated November 3, 1896.
Application iiled July 1, 1896. Serial No. 597,700. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom tm/tty concern:
Beit known that I, JosEE ZIMMERMANN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in Aachen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Needles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a sewing-needle with a iiattened eye and flattened central portion to facilitate the threading and the guiding of the needle while passing the same through the cloth, silk, and other woven fabrics.
The invention consists in the improved sewin g-needle having a central flattened portion arranged in the same plane as the flattened will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents in elevation my improved sewingneedle; Fig. 2, cross-sectional views through the same, taken on the lines A A, B B, C C, and D D; and Fig. 3, a sectional view on the line a; :c of Fig. l.
The needle ct is provided at its upper end with a flattened portion b, in which the eye c is arranged in the usual manner. The central portion of the needle is attened, as at cl d, and connects by the outwardly-curved planes e e with the rounded portions fand g thereof. The flattened portions cl d are arranged in the same plane as the iiattened portion b, as clearly shown. By this arrangement the threading of the needle is greatly facilitated, while the needle is held by its attened portion between the ngers for the purpose of threading. The eye cis always in front, that is to say, in the direct line of vision of the holder. The needle while being passed 'through the fabrics can be held and guided more easily and the fingers will not tire so quickly. Therefore more work can be accomplished in less time than with other sewing-needles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sewing-needle having a rounded body and a flattened eye portion and havin gits central portion flattened in the same plane as the flattened eye portion, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A sewing-needle, havinga rounded body and a flattened eye portion, and having its central portion iiattened in the same plane as the flattened eye portion, and having said central flattened portion connected with the rounded portions by outwardly-curved planes, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand in the presence of the two undersigned witnesses.
JOSEF ZIMMERMANN.
