llllllll/lll'll UNITED t STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK` ELINN, DEoEASED, on LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS; RY ABEL T.
` ATHERTON, ADMINISTRATOR.
SAD-IRON HEATER. b
specification forming part tf Letters Patent No. 57,055, dated August 7,1860.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICE FLINN, of Lowell, in the county ot Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements inSad-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eX- act description thereof', reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the let-ters of reference markedthereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and construction of the pillars, in akinga solid connection of the top and` bottom plates, tire-box, back tiues, and iiattened perforated gaspipe inclosed with wire-gauze, as hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de# scribe its construction and operation.
Figure l represents a planof a pillar sadiron. Fig. 2` represents a planof the same with the top ofi". Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 represents a section through AandB of Fig. 1. Fig.'5 represents a back-end elevation.`
ct represents the handle; b, the chimney; r, the outlet `of the chimney; s, the draft-holes; c, the non-conducting hand-fender; d, the top plate; e, the air-chamber; f, the top plate of,v
the re`box5 g, the bottom plate of the tire` box; h 71 the sides; jjj, the pillars, with their angles facing' the center; k, the wire-gauze; l, the flattened perforated gaspipe m, the rubber tube; n n, the spiral springs; o, the center ilue, and p p, tlieside tlues.
Theoperator, after attaching the end of the rubber tube m at q to the supply gas-pipe, the gas let on, the lighted match applied to the center iue, o, instant-ly ignites the gas which escapes from the tlattened perforated gas-pipe Z. The heat is evenly diffused and distributed over the entire interior of the tire-box by the aid of the top-plate, f, of the fire-box, which plate f is so constructed that it throws the flames against and between the pillars j jj. The pillars j jj being instantly heated thereby the heat is imparted at once to the top and bottom plates, f and g, of the tire-box and the sides h h, the wire-gauze lc acting' as an agent to consume the smoke and soot.
The Ilues 0 and j) p actas feeders to supply the burning gas with the required quantity ot' oxygen. The air-chamber e and fender c serve as non-conductors, keeping the heat from the handle a. The chimney b and holes s give the needed draft. Tire spiral springs n n prevent the rubber tubemfrom collapsing where itconnects with the supply gas-pipe at g and gaspipe l. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The angular pillars jjj, in solid connection with the top plate, f, of the re-box to the bottom plate, g, as herein-described.
2. The top plate, jiof the tire-box, so constructed as to` throw the dame of gas as herein described. y
