MECHANISM FOR TRANSMITTING MOTION.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Transmitting Motion, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to effect certain improvements in devices for transmitting motion; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a device for transmitting motion. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1 with parts in a different position than in Fig. 1.
The device is shown applied to a bicycle or veloeipede, although not necessarily confined to such use.
The frame 1 of the bicycle has a driving- Wheel 2, with pulley 3, engaged by band or other suitable connection 4, driven by pulley 5. A lever 6 is shown fulcrumed at '7. Two such levers are shown, but the description of one will illustrate the function of both. This lever 6 is shown forked or slotted, and between these lever branches runs a slide 8,
0 which forms a pedal and if provided with a toe-catch 9 will give the foot of the rider a good hold. The crank pin 10, projecting from pulley 5 and rotating with said pulley, engages slide or pedal 8. The oscillation of 3 5 lever 6 causes a rotation of pulley 5. One of the levers is shown as having its'slide or pedal 8 engaged by a crank-pin 10 011 crank-arm 11, extending from the shaft 12 of pulley 5. By having the levers 6 oppositely located and alternating in movement they will be adapted for the well-known pedaling motion. The fulcrum 7 of the levers is shown fixed on a suitable part of the frame 1.
The slides or pedals 8 can be readily set or slipped onto the levers, and light strips or bands 13, such as wire or the like, will keep the slides from dropping inward toward the pulleys 2 or 5. The part of each slide 8 to which a foot is applied can be suitably widened or formed so as to receive the foot of the rider, but if lightness of construction is desired the slide 8 may be left narrow throughout and merely padded, as with rubber, at the part where the foot is applied, so as to prevent slipping. 5 5
By having the crank-pin 10 provided with a friction-sleeve and by having a frictionsleeve on the guiding-stud 14 of the slide 8 the motion of the latter is eased.
The loops or strips 13, it is of course understood, are secured to slide 8, but are free to slide along a face of lever 6.
When the slide 8 is farthest away from the fulcrum 7, the lever 6 is in its upward mo tion and the foot of the rider, being engaged to toe-catch 9, can exert a lifting movement on said lever, so as to utilize the upward motion or lift of the foot as well as the downward motion or push of the foot.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A driving-wheel provided with a pulley,
a driving-pulley, and a connection between the pulleys, combined with a lever having a sliding pedal, and acrank connection between the driving-pulley and pedal substantially as described.
2. A driving-wheel provided with a pulley,
a driving-pulley, and a connection between the pulleys, combined with a lever having a 8 sliding pedal, and a crank connection between the driving-pulley and pedal, said pedal being provided with a toe-catch substantially as described.
