UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DOZIER T. BENTLEY, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO EDWARD L. O. WARD, OF FULTON COUNTY, GEORGIA.
SYRINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,245, dated October 27, 1896.
Application filed September 1, 1894. Renewed July 22, 1896. Serial No. 600,175. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOZIER T. BENTLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Douches and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which-- Figure 1 is aview of the device as it would be grasped with the hand in use. Fig. 2 is an end view of the device, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 4. is a section of the bulb, forming a pump, with the suction and discharge pipes leading thereto and therefrom.
In the figures like reference-characters are uniformly employed in the designation of corresponding elements of construction.
A is the bulb, a being the discharge-tube and a a suction-tube, both of which may be of any desired construction and be provided with check-valves of a nature adapted to the purpose.
The device is intended to be introduced into the vaginal passage by means of the finger of the physician or patient, who can direct the stream of .medicated fluid against any particular place on the walls thereof by a flexure of the finger and separate the sides of a wrinkled surface, or by pressure on the surface of the wall so dilate that point as to render the application of the medicament thorough. To this end an elastic loop a is secured near the forward end of the dischargetube a, and a band a passes from the under side of said band or loop a along the tube to its end, thence to the upper side of the said loop. This band may be either elastic, as rubber would be, or it may be non-elastic and made of fabric or silk or rubber cloth. Near the end of the tube a hole a is cut in the said band and the band is widened around and above same as a protection or sheath for the nail of the fin ger, preventing cutting of the delicate tissues. The finger being extremely sensitive to feeling at this point all roughened or swollen spots may be felt through the said hole, and by pressing the finger against the band and the end of the tube and squeezing the bulb the liquid may be ejected into said hole under the finger and confined exclusively to that spot, as would be desirable in the use of a fluid cautery.
If desired, for ease of insertion the tube may be made so as to be normally collapsed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A'douche consisting of a tube, a bulb secured to one end of same, an elastic band secured near the other end thereof adapted to receive the finger and a strip passing from the end of said tube to said band and widened so as to form a guard for the finger-nail.
2. A douche consisting of a bulb and a tube leading therefrom, an elastic band adapted to receive the finger secured to near the end of said tube, and a strip passing from the end of said tube backwardly to the said band and being perforated at the end of the tube for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
