B; B. SLEE.
. 'BARBERS- APPLIANCE.
Patented Oct. 27, 1896.
I 0 imm, m. M
v eAfiorgey WT sszs UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFIC RICHARD B. SLEE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. v
BARBERS APPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,107, dated October 27, 1896.
Application filed March 20, 1896.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD B. SLEE, of IVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Barbers Appliances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in barbers appliances, and more particularly to a device for supporting the head of a person while being shampooed.
IIeretofore in shampooing persons over washstands and the like it has been necessary for the operator to support the head of the person being shampooed or operated upon, thus leaving but one hand of the shampooer or operator free, which renders the operation of shampooing slow and tedious. This manner of shampooing is also very trying on the person being operated upon, because of the unsteadiness of the support.
The object of the present invention is to provide means for supporting the head of a person while being shampooed without assistance from the shampooer or operator, a further object being to provide 'an adjustable support or rest whereby the head may be supported in a comfortable and easy position.
With these ends in View my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improvement as applied when in use, and Fig. 2 is a detached sectional view of same.
A represents a tube, and 1 a rod, which latter is adapted to telescope or slide within said tube. At or near the upper end of tube A is located an internally-screw-threaded hole 2 for the reception of thumb-screw 3, by means of which latter the rod 1 is locked in any desired adjustment within said tube. The screw-threaded lower end of tube Ais adapted to receive the internally-screw-threaded core 41, which latter is carried by stopper or plug o. This stopper or plug is preferably made semi No. 584,171. (No model.)
of any suitable yielding material and is adapted to be inserted and snugly fit within the waste-openin g in the bowl of a washstand.
To the upper end of rod 1 is secured a headrest 6, which is preferably curved to conform to the contour of the forehead.
The device thus described is supported in the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings through the medium of plug or stopper 5,
which, as above stated, fits in the wasteopening of the bowl and maintains said device or support in an upright position. By attaching the support or tube to a yielding plug the support can move laterally, while it supports the head against downward pressure.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the construction described is very simple and easy of operation. When it is desired to use the support, it is first placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings and rod 1 adjusted so as to bring the head-rest in a convenient position for the person to be operated upon. The forehead of the person is then placed on the rest 6, which latter is covered with a towel or napkin, after which the head is ready to be operated upon. In View of the fact that the operator is not required to support or assist in supporting the head the operation can be more thoroughly and quickly performed. From an examination of Fig. 1 it will be seen that the position assu med by the person being operated upon is an easy one and much more comfortable than the position assumed when the head is supported in the usual manner. It will also be apparent that the clothes of the person being operated upon are less liable to be soiled or wet than heretofore.
The entire device, with the exception of plug or stopper 6, may be made wholly orpartly of any suitable metal; but for ordinary purposes I prefer to make the entire device, with the exception of plug or stopper 5, of iron or brass, and when of the former the several parts thereof may be nickeled or bronzed.
It is evident that changes in the construc tion and relative arrangement of 'the several.
parts might be made without departing from my invention, and hence I would have it unlower end of same and a curved head-rest secured to the upper end of said support.
4. A head-rest comprising telescopic sections, means for locking the sections against independent movement, ayielding waste-plug secured around an enlarged head on one end of said standard and a curved rest on the other end of said standard.
In testimony whereof I V have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
RICHARD B. SLEE.
itnesses:
