Be it known that I, ELEAZER KEMPSHALL, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lacing- Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lacing-hooks the heads of which are provided with a wear-resisting cover of material such as celluloid, adapted to be made plastic by heat, the cover being formed by molding the material on the metal head of the hook while it is in a plastic condition.
The invention has for its object to reduce to the minimum the quantity of celluloid required to cover the head of a hook of this class; and it consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a top view of a metal lacing-hook constructed in accordance with my invention without the wear-resisting cover. Fig. 2 represents a side View of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a View similar to Fig. 3, showing the celluloid cover in place. Figs. 5 and 6 represent modifications.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a represents the head, I) the shank or attaching device, and cthe neck, of a sheet-metal lacing-hook, the shank being here shown as of tubular or eyelet form, although it may be of any other suitable form of construction. The head a is concavo-convex or dome-shaped and has a continuous depressed margin (0, which is formed to rest on a flat seat or plate during the operation of molding the plastic material to form the cover d, said margin constituting a dam or barrier whereby the plastic material is excluded from the interior of the head, the latter being left vacant in the completed hook, as shown in Fig. 4:.
(t represents a flange which is formed on the margin a and is inclined upwardly and outwardly therefrom, so that when the margin of the head rests on a flat seat the flange a will overhang said seat and a crevice will be formed between the under side of the flange and the seat for the reception of the anchoring portion of the cover cl. The flange a may be either continuous, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or it may be a series of sections separated from each other, as shown in Fig. 5.
The head a being placed upon a suitable seat, on which the margin a rests, the cover (1 is formed by molding a mass of plastic material upon the head Ct by means of a suitable die, which presses the material closely against the outer surface of the head and into the crevice between the flange a and the seat on which the head rests. The plastic material is excluded from the interior of the head by the margin a, and is therefore formed into a concavo-convex cover d, the margin of which is interlocked with the flange 6L2, the interior of the head being left vacant.
It will be'seen that the described form of the head reduces to the minimum the quantity of celluloid required to form the cover, the latter being a shell covering only the outer side of the head instead of covering both sides, as heretofore.
