JOSEPH C. MORRISON, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN K. WILLIAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
BOlLER-TUBE EXPANDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,651, dated October 20, 1896.
Application led September 14, 1895. Serial No. 562,564. (No modelJ To all whom it may concern: ing Within the open end of the cylindrical Be it known that I, J OsEPH O. MORRISON, a casing-body 1. The said interiorly-threaded citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, feed-nut 8 is removably retained Within the in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, open end of the hollow body 1 by means ofthe 55 5 have invented a new and useful Boiler-Tube exteriorly-threaded flanged collar 9, screwed Expander, of which the following isa speciinto the open end of the casing-body against cation. the shoulder formed by the thickened bear- This invention relates to boiler-tube eX- ing end of the feed-nut, and the flange at panders; and it has for its object to provide the outer end of said collar Works against one 6o 1o a new and useful roller-expander of this chan end of said casing-body. The saidinteriorlyacter having simple and efficient means for threaded feed-nut 8 projects outside of the expanding the ends of boiler-tubes to securely body 1 and is provided on its outer end with fasten them in the tube-sheets. an adjusting hand-Wheel 10, that provides for To this end, therefore, the invention conturning the saine, and said nut accoinino- 65 f5 templates a construction of rollerexpander dates for adjustment therein the exteriorly for boiler-tubes whereby the same can be threaded adjusting-mandrel 11. The eXterireadily adjusted to suit different thicknesses orly-threaded adjusting-mandrel 11 is proof tube-sheets, and also readily and easily opvided with an inner tapered portion 12, from era-ted. for expanding the ends of the tubes Which is extended the straight guide-pin. 13, 7o zo parallel with the holes in the tube-sheet. that Works in the guide-opening4 in one end of With these and other objects in view, which the casingbody 1. The nnthreaded tapered will readily appear as the nature of the inportion 12 of said adjusting-mandrel Works vention is better `understood, the same conagainst the inner sides of the swaging-rolls 3 sists in the novel construction, combination, and is tapered reversely to the taper of said 7 5 z5 and arrangement of parts" hereinafter more rolls, so that when the mandrel is adjusted fully described, illustrated and claimed. into the casing by turning the feed-nut the In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective outer exposed faces of the rolls will be disview of a roller boiler-tube expander conposed parallel with the tube in which they are structed in accordance with this invention. adj usted, so that such tube will be expanded 8o 3o Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view parallel With the hole in the tube-sheet, as thereof. will be readily understood by those skilled in Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 the art. designates a hollow cylindrical casing-body The eXteriorly-threaded end portion 5 of the constructedin a suitable size to adapt the saine cylindrical casing-body 1 adj ustably accorn- 8 5 35 for insertion Within the ends of the boilerniodates thereon an interiorly-threaded iintubes to be expanded, and said cylindrical casger-nut la. The interiorly-threaded iingering-body is provided therein, at a point internut 14 is provided with a circumferential anmediate of its ends, with a circular series of nular groove 15, in which is loosely fitted the longitudinally-disposed slots or openings 2, in gage-collar 16. The gageccllar 1G is pro- 9o 4o which are adapted to loosely Work the tapered vided with a series of gage-arms 17, that are swaging-rolls 3, 'that are adapted to be adbent therefrom at spaced points and are disj usted within said openings out against the inposed over the cylindrical casing-body 1, parner sides of the tnbe Within which the tool has allel thereto, and by adjusting the nut 11i the been inserted. The said cylindrical casingends of said gage-arms toward the closed end 95 45 body 1 is provided in its closed end with a of the body 1 will be brought in contact With central guide-opening "l, and at its opposite the outer side of the tube-sheet to hold the open end the said cylindrical casing-body 1 tool properly in position for expanding the is exteriorly threaded, as at 5, and is provided tube in any thickness of tube-sheet, as will be with an inner circular bearing-recess 6, in readily understood. 10o 5o which turns the inner thickened bearing end Changes in the form, proportion, and the of the interiorly-threaded feed-nut 8, Workminor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or saoriiieing any of the advantages of this invention. A
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a tube-expander, a hollow body having a guide-opening in one end, a Circular bearing-recess at its other end, and a series of roll slots or openings bet-Ween its ends, the sWagin g-rolls, an interiorly-threaded feeddiut mounted for a fixed rotation in said bearingreoess, and a tapered mandrel having exterior threads engaged by the threads of said feed nut and a straight guide-pin extension Working in the guide-opening of the body, sub stantially as set forth.
2. In a tnbe-expander,a hollow easing-body provided with a closed end having a guideopening therein, a circular series of roll slots or openings, and an inner circular bearingreoess formed in its open end, the swagingrolls arranged in said slots or openings, an interiorly-threaded feed-nut provided with an inner thickened end turning in said bearing-recess and with a hand-Wheel atits outer end, a threaded collar screwed into the open end of the casing-body to hold the feed-nut in place, and an eXteriorly-threaded adjustingmandrel mounted in the feed-nut and provided with a tapered unthreaded portion and a straight guide pin projected from said tapered portion and Working in the guide opening of the easing-body, substantially as set forth.
3. In a tube-expander, the tool-bodyr provided witli an eXteriorly-threaded portion, an annularly-grooved finger-nut mounted on said threaded portion, and a gage consisting of a collar loosely tted in the groove of the nut and a series of horizontal gage-arms bent integrally from the Collar and disposed parallel With the toolbody, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH O. MORRISON.
