MATCH-DELIVERING AND CIGAR-CUTTING APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, OLE ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Sweden, Nicollet county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Delivering and Oigar-Outting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in match-boxes and cigar-cutters.

The object of my invention is to produce a device particularly adapted for use in cigarstores or other places where cigars are sold, which will perform the usual functions of a cigar-cutter and at the same time serve as a means for supplying matches, one at a time, when properly manipulated.

My invention also comprises a novel construction of strikingblock on which the matches may be lighted, and which block may be easily replaced when worn out.

With these objects in view my invention consists in the features, details of construction, and combinations of parts, which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the center of the match-compartment. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of-the delivering-slide and its attached mechanism. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the cigar-cutter. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the strikingblock clamp and the holder for the same in their normal positions. Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the parts separated.

Referring to the drawings, A is a hollow base, divided into two compartments 1 and 2 by a partition a. Over the compartment 1 and on top of the base A is secured a matchbox or match-delivering apparatus 13, which has side walls I), a back I)", and a front 17 which ends at a step Z2 below which the box is open. The side walls I) are each provided with a downward and forward inclined rabbet b in which is placed a removable partition D which divides the match-delivering box into two compartments, the front of which I will call the match-compartment, while the rear one contains the match-delivering mechanism. At the foot of the inclined partition b is a horizontal movable match-delivering slide 0, provided with a slot 0 of such a size as to hold one match loosely and yet not large enough to hold more than one match. The normal position of this match-delivering slide 0 is such that the match-holding slot 0 will be at the bottom of the match-compartment and at the foot of the inclined partition 12 The slide 0 extends forward beneath the front 11 where it ends flush with a cross-bar D, beneath which is arranged a downward and forward sloping inclined plane E, preferably formed of a looking-glass.

The slide 0, when moved forward by the mechanism to be hereinafter described, contacts' with its front end against a strip 17, projecting downward from the step b in which position the match-slot c is beneath the step b and forward of the cross-bar D.

For the purpose of moving the slide 0 back and forth it is provided with a cam-block F, secured to its rear edge and having a camsurface f. The cam-block is also provided with two holes f, into which project a pair of studs g, secured at their forward ends in a transverse brace G, fixed to the sides 1) immediately behind the bottom of the inclined partition b the front of said transverse brace being sloped to correspond to that of the inclined partition b Between the cam-block F and the transverse bar G are placed springs H, arran ged to press the cam-block rearward, these springs preferably being spiral and surrounding the studs g. The cam-surface f of the cam-block is engaged by the rounded surfaces 2' of a vertically-movable cam I, which slides in a recess it, out in a guide-block K, secured to the sides I) and the back I). The top of the cam-block I is provided with a plunger t, projecting through a hole Z in a horizontal guide-plate L, whose ends are rabbeted into the sides Z) and whose rear end abuts against the back b. This plunger 7; is surrounded by a spiral sping 1' Whose lower end rests against the plate L, while its upper end abuts against a head or collar t formed on the top end of the plunger. The said top end of theplunger is provided with a socket into which is inserted the lower end of a stem m, which projects through and is movable in a hole formed in a back lid 19 secured to the sides I) over the rear compartment, the top of this stem m being provided with a pushbutton M, which projects some distance above the said lid Said lid 1) projects forward sufficiently to cover the top end of the inclined partition whereby the latter is held in place firmly and may be readily removed by removing the lid 1) to permit access to the operating mechanism in the rear compartment.

Beneath the slide Cis a floor N, extending below the match-compartment and serving to prevent the matches from falling entirely through the match-receiving slot 0, this floor N ending on a horizontal line with the crossbar D, and preferably formed integral with the same.

The match-receiving compartment is closed by a lid 6 which may be hinged to the rear lid 13 but is preferably attached to it as follows: The front edge of the said rear lid l) is beveled downward and forward, while the rear edge of the front lid 12 is correspondingly beveled tofit snugly to said rear lid. To the under side of the lid 19 are secured two cleats b", whose ends project slightly beyond the rear edge of v the front lid and are adapted to project under the front edge of the rear lid 5 thereby holding the rear edge of the front lid'from being lifted directly up. At the front of the lid 13 and on top of the same is secured a suitable locking device engaging the front b which projects somewhat above said lid b the locking device in this case consisting of a button 0, moving in a horizontal plane and pivoted on a screw 0, secured in the lid b the button being provided with an upward -eXtending ear or thumb-piece o, by which it may be operated and swung with its front end, which is pointed, as shown at 0 projecting into a groove 0 formed in the rear face of the front 12 The operation of the mechanism thus far described is as follows: By swinging the button 0 so as to disengage its end 0 from the groove 0 in the front 11 the front edge of the lid b may be swung upward and the entire lid drawn forward until its cleats b are removed from engagement with the back lid If, after which the front lid may be removed and the match compartment filled with matches, the front lid being then replaced. hen it is desired to obtain a match, the button M is pressed downward, thereby forcing the cam I downward, as a result of which the cam-block F is engaged by the cam-surface i and crowded forward. When the match-compartment contains matches, the slot 0 in the slide 0 will be filled by a single match, and when, as above described, the cam-block F is forced forward the slide 0, to which said block is secured, will also be forced forward, and the single match contained in the slot, and which is held from dropping through the slot by the floor N,- will be pushed along said floor until it arrives forward of the cross-piece D, whereupon it will drop out of said slot onto the inclined plane E, and will slide down to the forward and bottom end of said inclined plane, where it may be removed by hand, the match being stopped from sliding oif the box altogether by means of a ledge P, which in this case is made ornamental and has a reduced central portion p toenable the fingers of the operator to readily grasp the match. On removal of the pressure from the button M the springs H and 6 will return the parts to their normal position, thereby drawing the slide rearward until the slot cis again within the match-compartment, whereupon another match will drop into said slot ready for dc livery at the next operation of the machine.

In the compartment 1, beneath the matchdelivering mechanism,is conveniently placed a drawer R, that may be used to hold several boxes of matches, if desired.

Referring now to the cigar-cutting mech anism, which is arranged on top of the hol low base A over the compartment 2, it will be seen that this is at one side of the match delivering mechanism, being secured to the door a forming a part of the top of said hollow base A. This door a is provided witha plate S, let into the door a? and flush with the top of the same, the plate being provided with one or more holes 8 s", &c., preferably of varying sizes, to receive the ends of the cigars to be cut. The lid (L2 is provided witha dovetailed recess or rabbet extending below the plate S and forward to the front edge of the door a T is a knife-block arranged transversely of the lid (0 and provided with an upward-extending dovetailed guide-piece If, to whose top surface is secured a knife t, the knife t moving in close contact with the bottom of the door a and in the recess within which the dovetailed guide-piece 25 also moves freely.

To the knife-block T are secured pins 25 which project through and are movable in holes a in a transverse cleat U, secured to the bottom of the door a and below the rear edge of the plate S. Between said transverse cleat U and the knife-block T are arranged spring devices, in this case consisting of spiral springs V, surrounding the studs 6 the front en ds of said springs abutting against the rear surface of the knife-block T, while the rear ends of the said springs bear against the front surface of the transverse cleat U, whereby the knife-block T, and with it the knife t, are normally held forward. The front edge of the knife-block T is rounded, as shown, and is adapted to contact with a rearward-inclined abutment-block \V, whereby as the lid a is forced shut the knifeblock T is crowded rearward by the resistance of the abutment-block V, and the knife t is moved across the openings 5-, thus clipping the ends off any cigar which is projecting through any one of said holes.

The tendency of the springs V being to force the knife-block forward, it results that when there is no pressure on the lid (0 the latter is raised by the action of the inclined surface of the knife-block T on the abutmentblock XV. To prevent the lid from being thrown too far upward by the action of the springs V and knife-block T, the latter is provided with a tongue i projecting clownward and forward and adapted to project I beneath the abutment-block TV, whereby the upward movement of the lid a is limited, while at the same time by forcing the knifeblock T rearward beyond its normal limit of play said tongue 25 will be disengaged from the under side of the abutment-block W and the lid a may be swung upward to permit inspection of or repairs to the cutting mechanism.

For the purpose of assisting the springs V in raising the lid a an auxiliary leaf-spring X is provided, being secured to the base A, as shown, and bearing upward against the lid of. As the lid (L2 normally stands slightly raised when not in use, I provide a downward extending guard-plate Y, secured to the under side of the lid a and projecting belowor on a line with the bottom of the knife-block T, so as to prevent the entrance of dirt to the compartment 2.

Within the compartment 2 is placed a drawer Z, adapted to receive the ends which are cut from the cigars. The operation of the cutting mechanism is obvious from the description of the same thus far given.

Referring to Figs. 6 and 7, it will be seen that my improved match-striking device comprises a socket or holder A, preferably formed from one piece of sheet metal having downward-projecting portions A and outward-projecting ends A which are fastened by screws, nails, or otherwise to the top of the hollow base A. The holder is closed by a downward-projecting portion A.

The clamp B is formed from one piece of sheet metal stamped into the shape of a small box without a front and having the forward-projecting ends of its top and bottom bent to form open tubes 13 or rolls. lVithin the clamp is placed a striking-block O, fitting snugly within said clamp and provided with a roughened or corrugated surface 0 which is overhung by said tubes B referred to above.

The striking-block is preferably provided with a roughened surface on both its front and rear edges in order that when one edge has become worn too smooth for proper effect on the match-head the block may be taken out and turned with its worn edge rearward, thereby bringing a new roughened surface into action. The striking-block may be of metal or other material, but preferably of pottery-ware, and when so worn as to be useless it may be readily replaced by a new striking-block. The clamp is held in the holder by the spring action of its tubes B one of which bears against the top surface of the hollow base A, and by its elasticity crowds the clamp upward against the top portion A. By having the two tubes 13 it is immaterial which way the clamp is placed in the holder, as there will always be one tube projecting downward into contact with the top of the hollow base A. Furthermore, since these tubes project forward of the corrugated or roughened surface of the striking-block 0, there is no trouble in striking a match on said striking-surface, since the match-head cannot slip off the roughened surface either downward or upward.

lVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a match-box having a downward and forward inclined partition dividing the box into a match-compait ment and a rear compartment, of a slide arranged below the match-compartment and provided with a slot, a cam-block secured to the end of the slide and within the rear compartment, a transverse bar, a pair of studs secured in said bar and passing loosely through the cam-block, a spiral spring surrounding each stud, said springs being between the bar and cam-block, a cam arranged to move at right angles to the slide, and in contact with the cam-block, a plunger to which said cam is fixed, a guide through which the plunger passes, a collar on the plunger, a spring surrounding the plunger, said spring bearing on the guide and against the collar, and a fioor beneath the front end of the slide, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a hinged lid provided with a dovetailed recess, a plate let into the lid and provided with holes to receive the cigar end, and a knife-block having a guide-piece movable in the dovetailed recess and provided with a downward and rearward inclined front surface, of a knife secured to said guide-piece and below the plate, a fixed abutment arranged to contact with the front surface of the knife-block, a transverse cleat secured to the under side of the lid and provided with holes, a plurality of pins fixed to the knife-block and movable in said holes, and springs intermediate the knife-block and transverse cleat, whereby the knife-block is pressed forward, substan tially as set forth.

3. The combination, with a hinged lid provided with a dovetailed recess, a plate let into the lid and provided with holes to receive the cigar end, and a knife-block having a guide-piece movable in the dovetailed recess and provided with a downward and rearward inclined front surface, of a knife secured to said guide-piece and below the plate, a fixed abutment arranged to contact with the front surface of the knife-block, a transverse cleat secured to the under side of the lid and provided with holes, a plurality and bottom bent to form tubes, of a strikingof pins fixed to the knife-block and movable block held by said clamp with its forward in said holes, springs intermediate the knifeedge back of the said tubes, substantially as block and transverse cleat, a downward-exset forth.
