SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 569,357, dated October 13, 1896. Application filed June 5, 1894. Renewed September 8, 1896. Serial No. 605,193. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN SNOW, of Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasting Ma chines; and I do hereby declare the following, with the annexed drawings, to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which :0 it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements 1n the toe-lasting plates of lasting-machines, whereby the continuity of their working edges is preserved.
The object of this invention is to provide means of adjustment for the removable plates whose edges contact with the toe, of the upper and mold it around the toe of the last and then fold its edges down upon theinner sole.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a toelasting head, showing the removable plates attached to their respective supporting-plates and the means of guiding and operating the supporting-plates. Fig. 2 is a plan of the 5 under side of a single supporting-plate with the adjustable and removable plate fixed thereon. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of Fig. 2 on the line of the adjusting and holding screws, showing the relations of screws 0 and plates.
In United States Patent No.422/734, granted to George W. Copeland and Joseph E. Crisp March 4, 1890, among other improvements shown and described therein, the toe-lasting plates are so constructed that they present an unbroken edge to the last and commence their folding action from the median line of the last, thus allowing them to start from any desired distance below the inner sole at the 0 toe and move up as desired. To this patent and the succeeding ones, which show and describe improvements thereon, reference is hereby made as to the specific construction and operation of the combined toe-lasting mechanism.
In the practical operation of these machines, in which the toe-lasting plates are moved many times per day, the median adjoining corners of the removable lastingplates which contact with the upper lose their touch with each other by attrition of contacting and supporting parts. This causes the lasting-plates to leave the median line of the toe of the upper unacted upon, and make a slight blemish, which is objectionable upon patent leather and other high grades of work. To remedy this fault, the lasting-plates are adjustably fixed upon their guiding and supporting plates, so that they can be located and fixed thereon, with reference to the median line or to each other, at the will of the operator. This is accomplished as follows: In the supporting-plate 1 there is made the counterbore-recess 2, whose bottom is slotted the length of the counterbore parallel with the supporting-overhang 3 of the supportingplates. A suitable screw at is fitted to the lasting-plate, so that when the back edge of the plate is resting against its support the body of the screw can be moved lengthwise the slot in the counterbore in contact with the front edge of the slot. lVhen the screws 4 are tightened, the contacting surfaces of the lasting and supporting plates are fixed together, as hereinbefore described.
To insure the position of the lasting-plates on the supporting-plates with reference to the median line, the taper-ended register and supporting screw dis fitted in the supportingplates so that its tapered end will engage with the back edge of the lasting-plates, as shown by Figs. 2 and 3, and correctly locate theircontacting corners 6, as shown by Fig. 1.
If by any reason the corners 6 lose touch with each other, the screws at are loosened and the one or both of the screws 5 advanced until the desired contact is restored.
Having thus described my invention, its construction and mode of operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In combination with a lasting-machine head of the class described, lasting-plates composed of guiding and supporting plates, and removable working edge plates, and 5 means to adjust said working-edge plates upon the supporting-plates with reference to the median line of contact of said working edges, substantially as shown and described.
2.
