SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,231, dated October 13, 1896.

Be it known that I, CHARLES O. RAY, of Gray, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvem ent in Pad-Holders for Lasting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows an old method of attaching the pads to a toe or heel clasp. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 an under plan view, of my new pad-holder. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view at line i at of Fig. 3, with the facing in place. Fig. 5 shows a modification, the clasp being composed ofrigid hinged jaws.

My invention is a new pad-holder for lastin gmachines. Ileretofore the flexible clasps used in lasting-machines for the heel and toe, as set forth, for example, in Frank Ohases Letters Patent No. 337,925 and No. 364,088, have been faced with leather or other pads, that have been fixed in place on the clasps in various ways-by wiring a, for exampleto portions of the chain-like clasp, as shown in Fig. 1.

lleretofore lasting-machines have been pro vided with a variety of clasps having flexible pads corresponding in configuration or contour to the different styles of lasts required, especially in respect of toes. lVhen the operator changes from one style to another, corresponding styles of padded pliable or rigid clasps have been substituted, and this practice has required the user of the machines to keep in stock a considerable number of the clasps at a very considerable aggregate expense.

The object of my invention is to make one set of clasps answer all styles of lasts, and to this end my invention consists, broadly, in the combination of a clasp with one or more pad-holders.

In the drawings, illustrating my invention in its preferred form, (L is a pliable clasp-in this example of sprocket-chain construction as set forth in said Letters Patent No. 364,088.

justable, as shown. The keepers project inwardly and clamp the pad or facing (Z of the clasp a, and the keepers consequently contact with the pad, so as to hold the pad between opposed surfaces of the clasp and keepers. These keepers b are conveniently and preferably formed of bars having shanks slotted at 6 and upturned ends 5, formed with inwardly-projecting points 19*, the purpose of the points being to more securely grip the pad d, which is engaged and tightly held in place on the face of the clasp by adjustment of the keepers, as will be plain from Fig. 2. Set-screws 19 pass through slots 5 into clasp a, and the pad-keepers are thus readily loosened and tightened for removing and replacing the pads. Support I) and padkeepers l) are mounted, preferably, at the under side of the clasp in order that their inwardly-projecting parts may not bear on the upper and so injure it during the lasting operation of the machine. The combined clasp and pad-keepers constitute my new padholder for lasting-machines.

It will be plain to all mechanics that my new pad-holders may be varied, if desired, in details of form and construction and in mode of combining the keepers with the clasp without departure from my invention, by means of which the pads although, readily removable, are yet firmly clamped and kept in place at the inner side of the clasp.

IVhat I claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a padholder for lasting-machines, the same comprising a clasp and one or more pad-keepers projecting beyond the inner face of the clasp and provided with angular ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a lasting-machine, the combination of aclasp and aflexible pad for the clasp with a pad-keeper projecting beyond the inner face of the clasp and clampingthe pad in position at the inner face of the clasp, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of a last-clasp, a pad therefor along the inner side of the clasp, and an adjustable pad-keeper clamp, which clamps the pad inplace along the inner face of the clasp, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination of afiexible last-clasp, a flexible pad therefor, and a plurality of padkeepers which grip and hold the pad in place, the pad being a facing along the inn er face of the clasp and mounted between opposed surfaces of the keepers and clasp, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The combination of a last-clasp with a facing; a pad-keeper having a pad-clamping projection, the pad-keeper extending beyond the inner face of the clasp, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
