.IOHN MACKENZIE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUCKEYE MALLEABLE IRON AND COUPLER COMPANY.
LOCOMOTlVE-TENDER COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,218, dated October 13, 1896.
Application led June 6, 1896' Serial No. 594,573I (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, JOHN MACKENZIE, a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive- Ten der Cou plin gs; and I do hereby declare the following to be af ull, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in draw-gear for locomotive tenders and cars; and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in side elevation of my improved gear attached to a tender or car, a portion of the tenderbeing shown in section. Fig. 2 is a view in plan of the same, the floor of the tender being removed. Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section taken through the spring-chamber. Fig. l is a transverse section through the parts under the front sill, and Fig. 5 is a view of one of the plates constituting a side of the spring-chamber.
A represents the tender or car, to the under side of which and between the end sillB and bodybolster C are located the plates D. These plates D, as shown in Fig. 5, each consist of a central portion a and two end portions a, the central portions a being ribbed on their outer faces, while the end sections are ribbed on theirinner faces, the ribs serving to strengthen the parts, whereby I secure maXimum strength with a minimum amount of metal.
The ends of the sections d of the plates abut at their ends, respectively, against the body-bolster C and the end sill B, while the lips a2 enter recesses formed in the lower face of the timber E, located centrally and running lengthwise the tender or car. These plates are placed parallel asuitable distance apart and are secured in place by the bolts 11, which pass vertically through the end sections a of the plates D and through the longitudinal timber E, and by the bolts b', which pass through the bottom plate E, through the top iianges d of the plates D, and through timber E. The bottom plate is provided at its four corners with the recesses c, adapted to receive the tongues e' of the plates D, and when the parts thus described are assembled the plates form a chamber open at both ends, solidly braced to the central longitudinal timber, and abutting against the body-bolster C and end sill B.
The draw-bar of the coupling F is provided at its rear end with shoulders f, which are engaged by the lips f of the U-shaped yoke G. or otherwise secured to the tail end of the draw-bar and extend rearwardly a distance behind the same, and when in place this yoke rests in the chamber formed by the plates D and E.
Passing through the yoke and resting with its ends normally against the inner face of flanges D2 of the plates D is the front follower D3,while a si milarly-constructed rear follower D4 passes through the yoke near the rear end of the latter and normally rests with its ends against the inner faces of the rear flanges D4. These followers being larger than the open ends of the chamber are thus prevented from displacement, and they are yieldingly held apart and normally held against their respective seats or flanges by the spring H, which latter is interposed between the followers and is seated at its ends on the knobs h', formed integral with and on the inner adjacent faces of said followers. Thus when the parts are assembled the front follower closes the front end of the chamber, while the rear follower closes the rear end thereof, the spring between the followers yieldingly holding thel latter in place. Vhen, however, the drawhead is pulled outwardly, the rear end of the yoke, acting against the rear follower, moves it forwardly and compresses the spring between the followers, and when the draw- The ends of this yoke are bolted, riveted, l
head is forced inwardly the tail end of the draw-bar, bearing against the front follower, forces it against the tension of the spring toward the rear follower.
Secured to the lower face of end sill is a plate I, formed so as to go under and provide a guide and support for the outer end of the draw-bar and coupling. This guide is of sufiicient length to permit of the required lateral play of the draw-bar while turning curves,
IOO
and is providcd at its sides with pockets for springs K, which latter operate to yieldin'gly maintain the coupling or drawfbar in a central position.
From this it will be seen that the coupling is free to yield or give endwise and laterally under pressure, while the parts which operate to lock it against endwise displacement are all located beyond the inner end of the drawbar and easy of access, it being simply necessary to remove the bottom plate E in order to get at the spring or either follower.
It is evident that numerous slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of parts herein shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details shown, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In draw-gear for locomotive-tenders, the combination with a body-bolster, end sill, central longitudinal timber connecting the body-bolster and end sill, side plates both of which are secured to the under side of the longitudinal timber, and abut at their ends against the end sill and body-bolsterand a bottom plate secured against the side plates, of a draw-bar, a yoke secured to the rear end of the latter, followers passing vthrough the yoke and confined between vertical ianges on the side plates and a spring interposed between the followers, substantially as set forth.
2. In draw-gear for locomotive-tenders, the combination with a body-bolster, end sill, central longitudinal timber connecting the body-bolster and end sill, side plates both of which are secured to the under side of the longitudinal timber, and a bottom plate having recesses adapted to receive projections on the side plates and secured to said side plates, of a draw-bar, a yoke secured to the rear end of the latter, followers passing through the yoke and confined between vertical flanges on the side plates and a spring interposed between the followers, substantially as set forth.
3. In draw-gear for locomotive tenders, the combination with a body-bolster, end sill, central longitudinal timber extending from the end sill to the bolster, side plates both of which are secured against the under side of said timber, the said side plates being of greater depth at their centers than at their ends and a bottom plate secured against the deeper parts of the side plates by bolts passing through the side plates and longitudinal timber, of a draw-bar, a yoke secured to the rear end of the latter, followers passing through the yoke vand confined between flanges in the side plates and a spring interposed between the followers, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with side plates, a bottom plate, followers and a spring, of a drawbar, a yoke secured to the draw-bar and embracing the followers, a combined support and guide for sustaining the outer end of the draw-bar pockets integral with the guide the open ends of said pockets constituting abutments for limiting the lateral play of the draw-bar and springs seated in said pockets and bearing directly against the sides of the draw-bar, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this 'specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MACKENZIE.
