STOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,212, dated October 13, 1896.
Application filed November 1, 1895. Serial NO- 567,574. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DELBERT E. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in stools, and especially stools that are used by performers on the piano or organ, in which it is necessary to secure adjustability quickly and easily to accommodate the different heights at which the operators sit.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved stool complete, and Fig. 2 is a rear plan view of the same.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the views.
The standards 1 are composed of cast-iron, more or less ornamental, having four legs, the top of said legs being connected by circular braces 3 4, as shown. To the bottom crossbrace 5 of the standard is pivoted in the bearing 6 a segment consisting of the uprights 7 and 8 and a section of an arch 9, toothed, as clearly shown. Said segment moves between uprights 10 and 11, which have their lower shanks in bearings in the circular braces 3 and 4, and are secured at the top to the base of the stool 12. About midway between the segment and the base of the stool is a pinion 13, the teeth of which mesh with the teeth in the segment aforesaid, said pinion being mounted on a shaft between the uprights 10 and 11.
Mounted in hangers 1i and 15, which are secured to the bottom of the seat, is a horizontal shaft 16, having a portion of its length enlarged and provided with a screw-thread 17, which meshes with a worm-gear 2, mounted on the pinion-shaft. On the outer end of said shaft 16 is carried a wheel 18, having a handle 19 secured to the periphery thereof, by means of which the said shaft is turned to the right or left, all of which is clearly illustrated in the drawings referred to.
The operation of my improved stool will be readily seen, and is as follows: The operator while sitting on the stool with the handle at the right side may turn the same, causing the threaded shaft 16 to revolve the worm-gear 2, which causes a backward or forward movement of the segmental bracket, thus raising or lowering the seat to the point suited to the operator. The advantages of an adjustable stool constructed as herein described will be apparent at a glance. A slight power eX- erted on the wheel 18, because of the employment of the screw-threaded shaft and the segmental bracket, as described, will elevate a heavy weight on the stool quickly and easily, and no locking device is needed to hold it in such position.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is The combination in a stool of a seat, a standard,a segmental toothed bracket pivoted to the base of the standard, a pinion meshing with the segment of such bracket, uprights vertically adjustable in said standard and carrying said pinion and seat, a screw-thread ed shaft suspended from the seat, a wormgear carried by the uprights and meshing with the shaft and means for operating said shaft, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
