FORCE AND LIFT PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,047, dated October 6, 1896.

Be it known that we, JULIAN LOUIS LE- EEBvRE and CHARLES SAMUEL UPToN, of Eureka Junction, in the county of lValla Talla and State of Washington,have invented a new and Improved Force and Lift Pump, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved force and lift pump which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and arranged to throw or lift a continuous stream of water.
The invention consists principally of a plunger-barrel containing two reciprocating plungers, separated one from the other by a packing fixed in the barrel, a suction-pipe having a valve and extending from the lower end of the barrel, a valved pipe leading from the suction-pipe above its valve to the barrel above the uppermost plunger, and a second valved pipe leading from the suction-pipe below its valve to the barrel between the upper plunger and said packing.
The invention also consists of certain part-s and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the 'accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the flgures.
Figure lis a sectional side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the plungers in a different'position. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the skeleton part of the plungers, and Fig.-4 is aside elevation of thelower end of the suction-pipe.
The improved pump is provided with a barrel made in two sections A A', connected with each other by a T A2, and on the upper end of the section A screws a T A5, connected with a discharge-pipe B. The lower end of the barrel-section A is formed with a T A4, supporting a suction-valve C, connected at its lower end with a suction-pipe D, adapted to extend with its lower perforated end D' into the water or other liquid to be lifted.
In the barrel-sections A A' operate the plungers F F', of which the plunger F is provided with a valve for the passage of the water, as hereinafter more fully described. The plungersF Fare rigidly connected with each other by a stem F2, which passes through a packing G, held in J[he upper end of the barrel-section A. The upper plunger F is connected with a plunger-rod F5, extending upwardly through the discharge-pipe B, to connect at its upper outer endwith a suitable mechanism for imparting the usual re- 6o ciprocating motion to the plungers F F.
From the suction-pipe D, below the valve O, extends pipe H, having a check-valve H and connecting with the T A2, as plainly shown in the drawings, and from the T 'A4 leads a 65 pipe I, likewise provided with a check-valve I and connecting with the T A3 on the upper end of the barrel A.
The plunger F is made with two cylindrical parts Fl F5, screwed together, as plainly shown 7o in Fig. 2, the upper endof the part F4 carrying a valve F, adapted to open upward on the downstroke of the plunger F'. On the parts F4 F5 are rings F7 F5, arranged alternately, and of which the rings F7 are prefer- 75 ably made of leather and the rings F8 of metal, so as to insure a proper packing of the plunger Fin the barrel A. The iixed packing G is similarly constructed and is made of two parts G G2, screwed together and carrying 8o alternately-arranged leather rings G4 and met-al rings G5, of which the leather rings G4 fit into an enlarged portion or seat in the upper end of the barrelsection A.
In the parts G G2 is arranged a rubber 85 packing G5, through which passes the stem F2. Directly below the fixed packing G are arranged air-openings A5, formed in the wall of the barrel-section A, to permit the air to pass in and out of the said barrel-section on 9o the up-and-down movement of the plunger F. Now when the plungers F F' are on the upstroke, as illustrated in Fig. l, then water is drawn in through the suction-pipe D, the water passing through the valve C into the lower part of the barrel-section A, the water also passing from the suction-pipe D up the pipe H and past the valve H into the T A2 and the lower part of the barrel-section A'.
On the downstroke of the plungers F F the Ico y water previously drawn in at the lower end of the barrel-section A is forced by the plunger F up through the pipe I into the dischargef pipe B, and the water in the lower part of the A section A' is forced up through the plunger Fand past its valve F( into the upper end of the barrel-section A and the discharge-pipe B. On the next upward stroke of the plungers water is again drawn into the several parts, as above described, it being understood that on this upward stroke the water above the plunger F is forced upward and lifted through the pipe B to the discharge. Thus a continuous stream of water is lifted or forced on each up or down stroke of the plungers F F.
The pump is very simple and durable in construction, not liable to get out of order, and can be readily repaired, as the several parts can be taken apart even by unskilled persons.
It is understood that the leather rings G4 readily expand in the enlarged seat in the barrel-section A, so as to form a very firm packing.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A force and lift pump, provided with a barrel having an enlarged seat, a packing made in parts and containing a central pack# ing for the passage of the plunger-stem, and alternately-arranged exterior leather rings and metal rings, of which the leather rings are adapted to expand into the enlarged seat, substantially as shown and described.
