SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,774, dated October 6, 1896. Application filed September 27,1895. Renewed July 22, 1896. Serial No. 600,177. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that we, ALBERT S. LAMBERT and EDMUND HOFFMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Olosures,of which the following specification is a true and exact description, reference being had to the acoompanyin g drawings, which form a part thereof.
Our invention relates to closures or stoppers for bottles, cans, or like receptacles, our object being to provide a simple and efficient locking-closure of novel construction.
The nature of our improvements will be best nnderstood'as described in connection with the drawings, in which they are illustrated, and in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through a bottle-neck and through our closure shown in connection with it. Fig. 2 is a similar sectional view of the closure, taken at right angles to the section of Fig. 1 and showing the two parts of the metallic closure assembled but not secured together. Fig. 3 is a top view of the closure; Fig. 4, a plan view of the lug-carrying ring which forms a part of the closure, and Fig. 5 a sectional perspective view of the bottle-neck adapted for use with our closure.
A indicates the bottle-neek,which is formed with two downwardly-extending and oppositely-disposed grooves A, terminating in circumferential grooves A formed with downwardly-sloping upper walls A 15 is the metallic closure, which is formed with a depressed central portion B adapted to enter the mouth of the bottle or other receptacle with which the closure is used, a circumferential shoulder B extending around the bottom of this depressed portion, and a depressed bead B being formed inside of the shoulder B 0 is a metallic ring adapted to fit around the head 13 and to be clamped between the bead and the shoulder B As shown in Fig. 1, the ring 0 is provided with outwardly-extending lugs O, which are the locking-lugs of the closure, and of these lugs there may be two or any desired number. Extending outward from the depressed portion B of the closure is a portion B in which or between whichand the top of the bottle or other receptacle we prefer to secure a washer, as indicated at E, and preferably we form a downwardly-extending and corrugated rim B on the outside of this portion B In using the closure the washer E is either placed and secured against the portion B of the closure or placed on the top of the bottle. The lugs C are then brought to register with the grooves A and the depressed portion B inserted in the neck of the bottle or opening of the can or other receptacle. The lugs 0 being brought to register with the circumferential grooves A the closure is turned so that the lugs pass into the said grooves, and pressing against the inclined walls A they draw the closure downward and compress the washer E between the neck of the bottle and the portion A of the closure, thus securing a tight closure. A reverse movement of theclosure of course withdraws it from the bottle.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A closure-cap formed of sheet metal having a depressed central portion 13 formed with a shoulder B and dependent flange B in combination with a ring 0 having outwardly-extending lugs C clamped between the shoulder 13 and flange B 7 ALBERTS. LAMBERT.
