UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS M. COTTLE, OF ALBERTVILLE, ALABAMA.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,745, dated October 6, 1896.
Application filed January 24,1896. Serial No. 576,656. (No model.)
To @ZZ wit-0m, t may concer/L:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. CoTTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albertville, in the county of Marshall and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads and Springs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements inbedsteads and springs therefor, having for its objects, among others,`to provide a simple and cheap construction readily applied to beds now in use and not liable to get out of order or to be broken in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top plan. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of one ofthebrackets, and Fig. 4 is a sectionaldetail.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the side rail, having secured to its inner face any desired number of brackets B, which are constructed as follows: Each has a back plate provided with openings b, through which pass the screws or other means which secure it in position upon the side rail of the bed, with a lateral lug or plate b at its lower end, upon which rests one end of a spring C, the other end of which is seated against the movable plate D, which has lugs d forming, a dovetail or undercut groove D', adapted to receive the guiding-flange B2 on the inner face of the bracket, this guiding portion being closed at its upper end, so as form a limit for the movement of the movable part, and terminating at a point from the base or lug b', so as to permit of the introduction of the undercut portion of the cap or movable part. A iiexible strip E connects the movable part with the base or support b. The cap or Vmovable part is formed with a lug e, having an opening for the reception of a screw or other means which serves to secure it to the bar F, which has upon its upper face the notches f to receive the slats of the bed.
This bar F is connected with the side rail A by the flexible strips G, as shown.
The operation will be readily understood from the preceding description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, and a detailed consideration is not necessary.
What I claim as new is '1. The combination with the side rail, of a bracket secured thereto and a spring-actuated movable part on said bracket, aflexible connection between the movable part and the bracket,a notched bar secured to the movable part, and a eXible connection between the notched bar and the side rail, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the bracket, having a guiding-flange closedat one end and open at the other, of a movable part having undercut grooves to engage and receive said flange, a spring between the movable part, and a lug on the bottom of ,the bracket, and
-a notched bar secured to the movable part and iiexibly connected with the side rail, substantially as shown and described.
vIn testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS M. COTTLE. Witnesses:
J. E. BROWN, JOHN W. THAXTON.
