Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM ROBBIN S, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND THOMAS H. FOULDS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED CLOTH ES-WRINGER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 56,865, dated July 31, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM RoBBTNs, of Gincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Olothes-Vringer; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to the class of clotheswringers which comprise a pair of rolls, of which one or both are made capable of yielding to the varying pressure of the clothes or other fabrics passed through them 5 and my invention consists in devices for the economical and efcient application of spring-pressure to the upper roller.
The frame of my wringer consists of two similar posts or uprights, A B, connected below by a drip-board, O, and above by albeam, D, for the attachment at its mid-length of a tightening and relaxing screw, E.
F are screw-clamps, by means of which the wringer is attached to the wash-tub. Gr is the lower roller, journaled horizontally in the frame, so as to work just clear of the dripboard.
The shaft of thelowerroll, extending through one of the posts, terminates ,in a square head, H, for the operating-winch I. The upper roll, J, is journaled in slots K in the posts.
A vertical perforation, L, in the upper portion of each post receives two pressure-rods, M M', between which is interposed an indiarubber orspiral spring, N.
O is my reversible wooden spring, scalloped at P equally on both sides, between its middle and end portions, so as to combinewith the required capacity for pressure the capacity for yielding to any excess of strain against the upper roll.
Oavities or countersinks Q below the spring O receive the upper ends of the rods M M in the position shown for the said spring, and precisely similar cavities Q on the upper side of the spring receive ina like manner the said upper ends of the rods M Ml when the spring is reversed or turned upside down. This arrangement enables the spring to be reversed whenever prolonged use has imparted to it a downward curve or set.
The beam D is traversed vertically by a tightening and relaxing bolt, E, which is screwthreaded at its upper portion to take a winged or hand nut, R.
A cushion, S, of gum may be interposed between the head ofthe screw E and the beam.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- 1. The reversible scalloped and countersunk spring O P P Q Q in the described combination, with the perforated and slotted posts A B, beam D, relaxing-screw E, upper roll, J, and rods M M.
2. In combination with the above, the spring N, interposed between the two pressure-rods M and M.
3. The combination of the spring washer or cushion S, the beam D, and the head of the screw E.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
HIRAM ROBBINS.
