Description

A. M. BACON.
Magazine Fire-arm,
Patehfed July 3l, 1866.
'WMA UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. M. BAOON, or WASHINGTON, DIsTRIcT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR To HIMSELF AND eno. E. n. DAY, OF SAME PLAGE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,846, dated July 31, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS M. BACON, of Washington city, District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Arms, to be applied to guns, rides, carb'ines, or pistols; and I do hereby declare the following1 to be an exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a top View; Fig. 2, a sectional view; Fig. 3, the grooved wheel; Fig. 4, the one end of the Wheel; Fig. 5, the oscillator; Fig. 6, a section of the cylinder or plunger for cleaning the chamber.
A represents the stock of the gun or carbine; B, the barrel; G, the oscillator, with `two chambers, that is operated by means of the diagonal grooved wheel D, with its ratchet-wheel E and pawl G, that is attached to the hammer H. I is a thumb-Spring at top that has a catch, J, at one end that catches into each aperture K at the top of the oscillator C. L is a spring at the side, having a pin, M, to catch into apertures in the end of the Wheel D and prevent it from turning back, and as a corresponding check on the oscillator C with the thumb-spring I. The oscillator is moved from side to side by the pin N working in the diagonal groove of the Wheel D. P is the mainspring, that forces the hammer H, and R R is the trigger and its spring. The oscillator operates on the screw S'. T is the movable breech, in which the wheel D, with its spring L, operates. U is a spring cylinder or plunger at the side of the gun, and. in front of the chamber of the oscillator, for the purpose of cleaning the chamber of the oscillator and forcing out the copper case of the cartridge after it has been fired oft' by merely pressing the finger upon the end ofthe cylinder. This cylinder U is only used when the gun is loaded by hand, and the cartridge is placed in the oscillator, and one on each side of the gun, as shown at Fig. l; but my gun is intended to be used by loading the oscillator by hand or with a magazine of cartridges in the stock of the gun, each cartridge being forced into the chamber of the oscillator by the spiral spring V, amagazne being on each side of the stock, the ball being so constructed that the ball and casing all are 'discharged together, and when using the magazine the cylinders U are dispensed with.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
The oscillating chambered breech block, plunger, and magazine combined, as constructed and arranged, with the hammer operating against the rear end of the chamber, and the mode of oscillating the same by the diagonally-grooved wheel, as described.
AUGUSTUS M. BACON.
