Description
i UNITED STATES PATENT' OFFICE.
OHIO, AssIGNOE To JOHN WALKER, PLAGE.
IMPROVED EGG-BEATER.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,845, dated July 31, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:-
Beit known that I, LEONARD B. ALBEN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and'useful Improvement in Egg-Beaters; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and Aeffective device whereby eggs can be beaten in the most thorough manner in a very few minutes and without danger` of slopping or throwing them over the operator.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of an egg-beater embodying my improvement, a portion being broken away so as to exhibit the internalconstruction.
The body of my egg-beater consists of a cylindrical vessel, A, closed at its upper end by the cap or coverB, to which there is attached the handle O.
The upper side of the cover B has secured to it a plate, D, provided with a projection, E, and lug F, for a purpose which will be hereinafter described.
Journaled vertically within the plate D is the shaft G, to whose lower portion is connected the agitators or beaters H H, while the upper end of said shaft Gr is secured to a pinion, I, which gears with the segment-rack K. The rack K is attached to one end of a lever,L, by the arms J J', and the other end of said lever terminates in an enlargement or swell,
M. the lever being provided with a downwardly-projecting pin, N, which engages with a suitable aperture in the part E of plate D, thereby permitting the lever to be operated in a horizontal plane.
The segment-rack K is retained inits proper position, so as to gear with pinion I, and is also prevented from being disconnected from plate D by means of the lug F.
Operation: The cover 'B having been tirst removed and the eggs poured into the cylindrical body A, said cover is replaced on top of the beater, and the loaded handle L M, being moved backward and forward in :a horizontal plane, imparts a very rapid intermittent rotary movement to the shaft G and its agitators H H, thereby causing the eggs to be most thoroughly beaten in a few minutes. Y
The enlargement M at the free end of the lever L acts as a pendulum, and enables the beater to be operated with greater rapidity and facility than could be done if said enlargement were omitted.
I claim herein as new and of myinventionrIhe combination of the plate D, lever L, rack K, pinion I, shaft Gr, and lug F, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
