V ATTEST I INVENTOR jmvz Ma /4915M? UNITED STATES .ATENT FFICE.
RICHARD D. CODY, OF WINONA, MINNESOTA.
WASHER FOR TOOL-POSTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,428, dated September 29 1896.
Application filed November 19, 1895. Serial No. 569 ,462. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD D. CODY, of the city of WVinona, in the county of WVinona, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washers for Tool-Posts and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The main object of my invention is to make a washer that will raise the cutting-tool horizontally any part of one-half inch, more or less, and at the same time be as solid as a solid washer.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing I have made a washer as is shown in Figure 1, and is made in two sections.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the washer. Fig. 2 is the top view of the washer, showing the shape of the steps. Fig. 3 shows the lower section of the washer ed gewise. Fig. 4 shows the upper section of the washer edgewise. The upper section of the washer, which forms the principal part of my improved washer, has steps on the upper side, and the lower side B is pitched to fit B, Fig. 3, of the lower section.
The pitch on Fig. 3, B, and Fig. 4, B, is onehalf inch to the circumference of the washer, and the operation is as follows: By turning the lower section, Fig. 3, two-fifths around it will raise the upper section one-fifth of an inch, which will be the height of the first step D D, (shown in Fig. 1,) from the lowest step E E The cutting end of the tool rests on E, Fig. 1. The shoulder A in Fig. 1 is at its limit when it is turned around under E, and if the tool is to be raised higher than the onefifth inch the lower section is turned back by the projection O to the shoulder A in Fig. 1, and the tool is placed on step D D, Fig. 1, and turned, as stated above, until the highest step is reached, which is the limit of the washer.
O in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is a projection on the lower section of the washer for a handheld for turning the same, and in Fig. 3 one half of O is left off to show the pitched line B of the lower section of the washer.
I am aware that prior to my invention washers for tool-rests have been made with inclines. I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly, but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in an adjustable washer for a tool-post of an uppersection provided with the steps D upon its upper plane and a pitch surface B upon its lower plane with a lower section provided with a pitch surface B upon its upper plane and a projection 0 upon its edge substantially as described.
RICHARD D. CODY.
