O.SENDTNER.
RESISTANCE GOVERNOR.
No. 568,045. Patented Sept. 22,1896.
. Ill] illl @x ws UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO SENDTNER, OF DORNBINN, AUSTRIA-HUN GARY.
RESISTANCE-GOVERNOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 568,045, dated September 22, 1896. Application filed January 31, 1896. Serial No. 677,636. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Orro SENDTNER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Dornbinn, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Resistance-Governors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a resistance-governor whereby the runningof any rotating shaft or shafting is maintained at a certain speed by automatically inserting a resistance as soon as the number of revolutions increases. This resistance, which increases with the number of revolutions of the shaft, causes a proportional decrease on the shafts velocity.
In the apparatus which forms the subject of this application the resistance is caused by imparting a certain but only momentary velocity to a liquid in the way as hereinafter specified. i
The accompanying drawing shows an arrangement of apparatus as applied to any rotating shaft.
In a casing K rotates a disk F, provided with a number of wings S on the principle of centrifugal pumps or fans, which is directly attached to the shaft to be regulated. Vlis a valve which is operated by a centrifugal or other governor T, as indicated in the drawing, and through which liquid is admitted into the casing K. A suitable opening 0 is provided in the peripheryof the casing for the purpose of facilitating a prompt and free discharge of the admitted liquid when set in motion. As long as the speed of the governor T is below a normal valuethe valve V is closed and the wings S revolve in an air-space. An increase above the normal speed will cause the valve V to be lifted from its seat, the height to which it is lifted being proportional to the increase in speed. The effect of this is that with the increase of the admitted quantity of the liquid the necessary power to set this liquid in motion and to-discharge it from the casing is increased in the same proportion, thus preventing any undue acceleration in the shafts speed. The arrangement of this governor can be made suitable for either a horizontal or a vertical shaft.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a resistance-governor, the combination of a disk, provided with wings or blades on the circumference and rotating in a'casing, a valve whereby liquid may be admitted into the casing, and means for the discharge of the admitted liquid.
2. In a resistance-governor, the cornbination of a disk, revolving in a casing, a valve for admitting liquid to the casing, a centrifugal, governor maintaining the valve closed when it is running at normal speed, but opening the valve when speed is unduly accelerated and admitting an amount of liquid to the casing which is proportional to the amount of acceleration above the normal.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
