NITED STATES CHARLES D. ALLEN, OF ARKANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
SAMPLE- HOLD ER.
SPECIFICATION forming ar of Letters Patent No. 568,012, datedsepternber 22, 1896.
Application filed April 18, 1896 To all whom it mat concern."
Be it known that 1, CHARLES D. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arkan sas City, in the county'of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sample-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to sample-holders adapted to be inserted in a bolt of cloth between the ,inner fold of the cloth and the board on which the cloth is wound and the object of my invention is to improve the construction of holders designed for this purpose whereby they may be rendered more practiflaps, showing the stiffeningstrip. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder closed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the holder partially closed; Fig. 5, a longitudinal vertical section of a bolt of goods with the sample-holder in position; and Fig. 6 is an end view of the same, showing the end of the sample-holder.
Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
1 represents the sample-holder, which is formed from a single blank of stout paper and which is preferably reinforced with muslin at the folding-lines, as indicated at 2 in Fig. 1. The blank is so formed as to have the bottom portion 3, the'side flaps 4, and the top flap 5 adapted to be folded over and rest on the side flaps when the holder is closed. The side flaps are out through to form tongues 6, and the top flap is slotted, as indicated at 7, to receive the ends of the tongue 6. The edges of the top flap are recessed opposite the slots 7,
Serial a. 588,066. on) model.)
A the tongues (i, so that when. the holder is closed, as shown in Fig. 3, the tongues will be flush with the side edges of theholder and not form projections to obstruct the insertion or withdrawal of the holder into or froin'the bolt of cloth.
The top flap 5 is stiffenedby means of a strip 9 of thin metal, whalebone, or other suitable material, and this strip is held in position by means of muslin or other suitable fabric 10, placed over it and cemented to the flap 5, as shown in the broken-away section of Fig. 1.
To one of the side flaps 4 a piece of tape or similar article 11 is securely fastned, and to the outer end of the tape a ring 12 is secured, said ring projecting slightly beyond the front edge of the holder, as clearly shown in the drawings. The front edge of the bottom portion 3, the side flaps 4, and the top flap 5 are all notched out, as indicated at 13, in such manner that when the holder is closed all the notches will be in alinement with the ring 12 to permit the latter to be readily grasped for the purpose of withdrawing the holder from off the winding-board 14, on which the bolt of cloth 15 is wound.
In operation the samples are prepared by the manufacturer of the cloth and are laid on the bottom portion 3 of the sample-holder and the side flaps 4 folded over upon them, the side flap 4, to which the tape 11 is attached, being preferably below the other. The top flap 5 is then folded over upon the flaps 4 and the tongues 6 inserted in the slots 7. The holder is then ready to be inserted in the bolt of cloth, and the stiffening-strip 9 will facilitate this, inasmuch as it will prevent the holder from doubling upon itself. The holder can be readily removed by grasping the ring 12 and pulling on the tape 11.
Havingthus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'1. A sample-holder formed from a single blank, having the bottom portion 3, side flaps 4, and top flap 5, the side flaps being cut to form tongues and the top slotted and also provided with recesses at its edges opposite as indicated at 8, for the purpose of receiving said slots, the said slots and recesses receiving the tongues of the side flaps when the holder is closed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A samp1e-holder having flaps to fold upon each other, combined With a stiffeningstrip secured to one of said flaps, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A sample-holder formed from a single blank, having flaps to fold upon each other, combined With reinforcing material at the folding-lines of said flap, and a stiffeningstrip secured to one of said flaps, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A sample-holder formed from a single blank, and having flaps to fold upon each other, combined with a stiffening-strip secured to one of said flaps, said holder being adapted for insertion in a bolt of cloth, and a device secured to another of said flaps to be grasped for the purpose of Withdrawing the holder from the bolt of cloth, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a sample-holder formed from a single blank and having flaps to fold upon each other, tongues formed in the side flaps to enter slots in the top flap, a stiffening-strip secured to the top flap, and a tape secured to one of the side flaps, and a ring on the tape, projecting beyond the front edge of the holder, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES D. ALLEN. \Vitnesses:
