UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC GEORGE WVILKINS ROWELL, OF OGDENSBURG, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID E. SOUTHWICK, OF SAME PLACE.
BURlAL-CASE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart a Letters Patent No. 568,001, dated September 22, 1896.
Application filed May 5, 1893. Serial No. 473,136. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WILKINs Row- ELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ogdensburg, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Burial-Case, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to burial-cases; and it has for its object to provide a sanitary burial-case for caskets, &c., adapted for general burial purposes and for the shipment of caskets from one point to another, and, furthermore, to provide a construction whereby the case is air and water tight when closed and whereby the interior is readily accessible.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a burial-case embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the, parts of the ease disconnected, the lid or cover being shown inverted and the locking devices being omitted. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the fastening device employed in connection with the case.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates the body of the case, comprising an outer wooden box 2 and an inner lining 3, of non-corrosive metal, such as copper, galvanized iron, or other equivalent, said lining being extended outward at its upper edge to cover the upper edge of the box and terin inatin g flush with the outer surface thereof. Fixed to the upper edge of the box is a gasket 3, of rubber or other suitable compressible material, the outer edge of which is flush with the outer surface of the box and the inner edge of which is flush with the inner surface of the metallic lining.
The cover or lid 1 comprises an outer wooden top piece.5 and an inner non-corrosive metallic lining 6, of a similar material to the lining of the case proper and having a depending flange 7, the dimensions of which are such that when the lid or cover is in place upon cover is arranged in contact with the upper surface of the gasket, and it will be understood that by the depression of such lid or cover said gasket may be compressed and caused to bear at its inner edge firmly against the outer surface of the flange to form an. air and water tight joint. Within the said flange 7 is arranged a wooden lining or block 8,which holds said flange extended against the inner surface of the lining of the case and against the inner edge of the compressible gasket to prevent the inward bending of such flange.
In order to accomplish the effective compression of the gasket in order to form a perfectly air and water tight joint, I employ a series of fastening devices respectively attached to the different sides and ends of the case, each of such fastening devices consisting of a keeper 9, secured to the edge of the lid or cover, and a keeper 10, secured to the exterior surface of the box adjacent thereto, said keepers having vertically-disposed securing-plates 11, through which are passed screws or their equivalents for attachment to the parts of the case, and upper integral horizontal lugs or ears 12 and 13, provided, respectively, with keyhole-slots 14. The lug or ear 12,which is carried by the lower keeper, is provided with a lower inclined or cam surface 15, and the key which engages said keyhole-slots comprises a round shank 16, an upper angular head 17, adapted to bear upon the upper surface of the lug or car 12, and a ward 18 at the lower end of said shank, adapted to pass through the keyhole-slots and engage the under inclined or cam surface of the-lug or car 12. After the keys have been fitted in the keyhole-slots byalining the wards 18 thereof with the extended or elongated portions of such slots, and after the wards 18 are arranged below the planes. of the lower lugs or cars 12, a wrench may be applied successively to the angular heads of the keys, and said keys may be turned in order to cause the wards 18 to ride upon the inclined or cam surfaces and thus draw the lid or cover downward to compress the gasket. The lid or cover may be released to adapt it for removal by turning the keys in the opposite direction until the wards thereof register with the elongated portions of the keyholeslots.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacriflcin g any of the advantages thereof.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a burial-case, the combination of a box provided with a metallic lining which is extended outward to cover the upper edge of said box, a lid or cover provided with a metallic lining and a depending flange corresponding in shape and size with the interior of the lining of the box and bearing against the inner surface thereof, a gasket disposed between the upper edge of the box and the under surface of the lid or cover around the depending flange carried thereby and in contact with the linings of said box and lid or cover, the inner edge of said gasket being in contact with the outer surface of the depend ing flange, and means for securing the lid or cover to the box and depressing the former to compress the gasket, substantially as specified.
2. In a burial-case, the combination of a box provided with a metallic lining, a lid or cover provided with a metallic lining, a depending flange carried by the lid or cover and fitting snugly within the box with its outer surface in contact with the inner surface of the lining of the box, a compressible gasket interposed between the upper edge of the box and the under surface of the lid or cover and adapted to bear at its inner edge against the outer surface of said depending flange, a block arranged within the depending flange to prevent inward bending ordefiection thereof, and fastening devices connecting the lid or cover and the box and adapted to depress the former to compress the gasket, substantially as specified.
3. In a burial-case, the combination of a box, a lid or cover, a compressible gasket in terposed between the upper edge of the box and the under surface of the lid or cover, and fastening devices connecting the lid or cover and box and having ears or lugs secured re-. spectively to the lid or cover and the box and provided with keyhole-slots, one of said lugs or ears being provided with an inclined or cam surface, and keys having rounded shanks, angular heads, and wards to engage the inclined or cam surfaces of the ears provided therewith to compress said gasket, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
