S. BARRETT.
WASHING AND STARGHING MACHINE. No. 567,574. Patented Sept. 15, 1896.
NITED STATES SAMUEL BARRETT, OF KEIGI-ILEY, ENGLAND.
WASHING AND STARCHING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,574, dated September 15, 1896.
Application filed December 3, 1895. Serial No. 570,886. (No model.) Patented in England December 24, 1894, No. 25,080.
, chines, (for which a patent has been granted to me by the government of Great Britain and Ireland, No. 25,030, dated DecemberQat, 1894,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct an apparatus by a novel combination of parts so arranged as to be suitable for effectually washing clot-hes or the like in a short time and in such a manner that after the clothes are placed in the apparatus no attention is required from the operator until they are cleansed, and to so arrange the machine that it is applicable for starchin g.
In describing my invention in detail, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation, partly in section, of a machine constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View, looking in at the back of the barrel, on line a b. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a valveoase, showing its valve within; andFig. i is a bottom view of the valve.
The washing or starching barrel A is placed at an angle and supported by a short shaft B, bolted by webs or otherwise suitably secured to the bottom 0 of the barrel A. The opposite end of the barrel is covered bya lid D, having a hole in the center, into which may be fitted a movable lid.
The interior surface of the bottom C is corrugated, and around the internal circumference of the barrel A a number of shelves or partitions E are fixed, dividing the interior for some distance from the circumference of the barrel into divisions.
The short shaft 13 is supported by a suitable bracket-journal F, and has a bevel-wheel G secured thereto, into which is geared a pinion G, (indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) mounted on a shaft driven by pulley J in any convenient manner. The short shaft 13 is hollow for some portion of its length and fitted at the outer end with a stuffingbox and gland of the ordinary construction.
Through this gland passes a steam-pipe K,
conveying steaminto the hollow shaft B, from which project a number of branches L, communicating with the interior of the barrel A. Each branch L is by preference provided with a pipe L and L one branch ing to the right and the other to the left, in each of which is a chamber containing a dropvalve. In describing these branch pipes and valves reference is made to one set or series only, the other branches with which the machine is fitted being of the same construction.
The chamber M in pipe L is truly bored throughout and reduced in diameter at one end, a valve-seat being formed at N, and in the wider portion 0 a circular valve P is placed, the circumference of which is grooved somewhat, as shown by detail drawings.
The chambers M and M are arranged and provided with similar valves of a weight sui ficient to close the opening against the pressure of steam when the pipe L is in certain positions.
It will be obvious that on the barrel A and branch pipe L revolving the valves will change their positions in the respective chambers. Nhen the pipe L is at the top or near thereto, as shown, the opening from the hollow shaft B will be automatically closed by the gravity of the valve P, thus stopping the supply of steam to the interior of the barrel A, the branch pipes L and L being in such position that the respective valves have no effect on the valve-seatings due to gravity.
On the barrel A rotating in the direction of arrow and the pipe L getting from a vertical position to about or below the horizontal the pressure of steam then overcomes the weight of the valve P, thus allowing steam to pass and escape through branch L and valve P into the liquid in barrel A, and when the branch L approaches the bottom the valve P opens, allowing steam to escape into the liquid, the valve P automatically closing on the rotary upward movement. Thus by these means the liquid in the barrel A is kept hot by a regular supply of steam escaping into the liquid through the respective branches near the bottom of their circular path. The clothes or the like are placed through the opening in center of lid D into the barrel A, which is partly filled with liquid, which, by the rotation of the barrel, is agitated and the clothes or the like continually changing their position. The partitions E, passing through the liquid, agitate the same and raise the clothes some distance, and by the barrel A and partition E being at an angle the clothes or the like slide toward the corrugated bottom 0 and fall into the liquid. The descending divisions striking the liquid swell it toward the falling clothes, driving the liquid through the same. Thus by the heating of the liquid and continuous agitation the dirt and foreign matter are rapidly and effectually removed from the fabric.
It will be seen that when applying the apparatus for starching, by the sliding motion of the fabric and the agitation of the starching liquid, the starch is in a short time driven equally through all portions of the fabric immersed in the barrel.
What I claim as my invention is A washing or starching barrel A, mounted and rotated at an inclination, combined with one or a series of branch pipes provided with automatic opening and closing valves for the purpose as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL BARRETT.
