Description

UNITED STATES PATENLOEFICE.
t JOHN FLINN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
| MP'R'ovE D BED- BoTTo M.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,740, dated July 31, 1866.
` nia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Bed-Bottom Spiral Springs; and I do hereby declare that the iollowing is a full,
' clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in Which- Figurelis an elevation, and Fig.2a sectional plane view, of the said improved spring apy plied to a bed-bottom slat, like letters of reference indicating the same parts when in both figures.
The object of my improvement is to produce a more reliable, steady, and substantial means ofadjustably fastening and supporting the well-known wire spiral springs on the wooden slats of a bed-bottom and my invention consists in so continuing' and bending the wire of the usual bottom coil of the spring as to cause it to extend from the middle of the width of the upper side of the slat, when the spring is centrally applied thereto, across to and downward over and' below the one side edge of the latter, and form thereat two or more small vertical spiral-spring coils, and thence half-Way across the under side of the said slat back to a point directly under theA main spring, where, by a short upward turn, its extreme end is formed into a blunt vertical point, which can be readily indented by hand sufciently into the wood of the slat to keep the spring in place vertically thereon, and also admit of its being removed or shifted with the greatest facility, as occasion may at any time render desirable.
In the drawings, A is the slat of a bed-bottom; B O, the wire spiral spring, b' being its bottom coil or base; b2, the extension thereof forming the small vertical spring-coils c c and the bluntpointed vertical end c2.
The main spring B C is made in the usual tapering spiral form, generally of coppered wire, and of the size shown in the drawings; butinstead of turning the free end of the Wire of the bottom coil, b', inward to the center, and then directly downward, so as to produce a short vertical stem, which will enter a ver tical hole made for it in the slat, as heretofore, I continue the wire of the bottom coil, b', tangentially from the same, so that when y the said spring B C is in proper position upon the slat A it will extend in a straight line to the sideof the said slat. Ithen bend it downward over the edge of the slat A to the lower side of the latter and form thereat two or more vertical spiral coils, c' c', and then I bend it tangentially from the said coils c c -back to the axis of the main spring B O, when, turning it up vertically, I cut it off and make the blunt-pointed stem c?, as represented in the drawings.
It will be seen, therefore, that the spring B C is provided with a springclamp, Which is applied to the slat U by simply springing it on from the one side edge of the latter, and then pressing the short pointed stem c2, by hand, slightly into the wood ofthe under side of the slat, as represented in Fig. 1.
It will also be seen that this fastening for a bed-bottom spring is an improvement, as it will be more reliable, steady, and substantial in its support of the spring B C than the old one, and that at4 the same time it will admit of being removed or shifted at pleasure with the greatest facility; and moreover, While the bottom' or smaller end of the spring will be held in place rmly by the spring-clamp, as described, its 4upper or broader end is left entirely free from and independent of any of the other springs in the bed-bottom.
I am aware that an eye has been formed at the upper or broader end of a conical or conoidal spring by banding the Wire so as to produce thereat a iiat loop, through which a thin slat can be introduced so as to connect the said upper or broad end with other like springs in a series, While the Wire of the smaller end of the spring is formed into a straight vertical stem, whereby the spring can be supported in a hole made in the base or foundation slat, as in Manuels patent of December 12, i865.` Therefore I do not desire to claim anything found in the said patent but,
Having thus fully described my improved spring for bed-bottoms, what I claim as new therein of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is confined to the following, viz:
In combination with a bed-bottom, spiral spring B O, extending and bending the wire of the bottom coil, b', of the same, so as to produce the spring-clamp b b2 c e c2, substantially in the manner described and set forth, for the purposes specified.
' JOHN FLINN.
