Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN K. FERGUSON, OF PORTLAND, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-CONDENSERS.
v Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 56,738, dated July 31, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN K. FERGUSON, of Portland, in the county of Jeiferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Gondensers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, A represents a pipe, which conveys the steam, after it has been used in the cylinder of the engine, to the condensingcylinder B. The cylinder B may be made of boiler-iron, and is provided at the end at which the pipe A enters it with a water-chamber and a cold-water opening at a. The cold-wa ter chamber connects with a series of cold- Water tubes, C C, which said tubes are perfo rated with a great number of small openings, i
' rIhis box is subdivided into apartments by means of partitions O and P, one of which, O, runs entirely across the box, while the other, P,only half-way, or to partition F.
Gr, H, and I represent valves in the cham bers of the box, formed by the partitions O and I?. L and M represent pipes from forcepumps, one of which enters the box E on one side of partition F, and the other onV the other side. The pumps which connect with these pipes L and M act both as draw and force pumps. They draw the condensed steam from the cylinder B into the channel-Ways, and force it from them, as will be hereinafter described.
.I represents an opening in the partition F. K represents a pipe in the box E, through which the water and condensed steam is forced from the said box.
In using this condenser the exhauststeam, as has been stated, is brought through the pipe A to cylinder B, where it is subjected to cold-water spray or jets of cold water from the perforated pipes G C. As the steam is thus condensed, it, with the water which was used for condensing, falls into the bottom of cylinder B, and passes out into box E through valves D and D.
The two force-pumps, working, force the water on one side of partition F, from chamber ac to x, and then into 50, and thence up the pipe K. rIhe pump on the other side forces the water from chamber rv into 00"', and thence up pipe K.
It will thus be seen that a pump is used for each exhaust, and that the channel-ways on each side of partition F are kept from filling.
An opening is made in the top of box E, over each of the chambers in it, so that in case anything becomes deranged with the valves the bonnets or doors of these openings may be removed and the valve set to right.
The number of pipes O Will be regulated by the amount of steam to be condensed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. 7The cylinder B, provided with a series of perforated pipes, G C, and valves D D', and used with the exhaust-pipe A and cold-water pipe at a, substantially as and for the purpose` specied.
2. 'Ihe box E, provided With a series of chambers and valves, as described, when used WitlrF the cylinder B and force-pumps M and L, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
Asevidence that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of,
Witnesses B. F. LEMMoN, l -J. M. MAsoN.
