IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-VCIQOSETS.4

' of it, either by the urine or excrement of a person; and it also consists in so constructing the seat that when not in use the vault is en-` tirely closed, the present arrangement of the seat forming au extension and addition to cer'- tain improvements in privy-seats invented by me, and on which Letters Patent were issued bearing date September 5, A. D. 1865, and. numbered 49,731. f

In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvements are illustrated, Figure l being a plan or top view of a privy-seat constructed and arranged according thereto, showing it in an open position; Fig. 2, a partial side elevation and vertical section of the privy-seat when opened, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the privy-seat closed, with a portion of one side of its box broken out.

A in the drawings represents a vibratory seat, with the usual opening a,) which seat, at its rear end, is hinged to the frame or box B, which is to be located immediately over the privy-vault. This seat A has secured to it a curved front, C, and two side pieces, c o, and when the seat is shut down these front and side pieces completely close the opening to the vault, as shown in Fig. 3, thus preventing the eftluvia from arising from the vault into the privy-room.

D is a screen or cover for the seat A, having handles d d attached to it; E E, two arms pivoted to the screen or cover D, near its rear end, and also pivoted to 'the arms F F, the screen or cover D being hinged at its rear end to the box or frame B.

At and near the front of the seat are pivoted the arms F F, hereinabove referred to,

which arms, upon their lower ends, have friction-slides f f, andare confined to their proper position by means of guide-blocks G G, secured to the sides of the box or frame B.

H is a platform or foot-rest hung at h h to the box B, and where it unites with the urinal I. This platform is providedwith two levers, J J, on which levers move thefrictionslidesf f of the arms F F.

In the urinal I is an opening, at i, to allow i Va free passage of the urine to the vault.

Having thus described the construction and arrangement of the privy-seat embraced in the present invention,'I will now proceed to explain its operation.

When the seat'A is closed the arms J J are almost perpendicular, with the platformH elevated and in a vertical position, where it is maintained by means of the friction-slides ff of the arms F F, that are in contact with the lower ends of the levers J J attached to the platform H, the urinal I, when the platform is thus elevated,'being uncovered.

When it is desired to use the seat A, the screen or cover D is raised by either of its handles d d t0 a vertical` position, by means of which, through the connecting parts hereinabove explained, the seat A is brought to a horizontal position, the platform H, 'as the seat and cover are thus raised, gradually turning on its bearings until it comes to a horizontal plane and to a fest upon the top of the urinal I, thus completely closing it, in which position of the platform H the friction-slidesfj' of the arm F F are in contact with the levers J J, near their fulcrums h h, when the person desiring to use the privy-seat now steps upon the platform H, and sitting upon the seat A, by producing the slightest pressure of his feet upon the platform H, theseat is securely held in a horizontal position, the seatA and screen D, the moment the person removes from the seat and steps from the platform, falling by their own weight, at the same time raising the platformH to its original vertical position, and thus uncovering the urinal.

The privy-seat may be constructed with or lWit-hout the urinal I, or the urinal maybe placed ou the under side of the platform H, near its front end, so as to raise the same to a more convenient height, and also the box or frame B may be set down into the floor, so as to allow the platform to descend and rest on the or, in which case a urin'al may be placed in any vconvenient place in or near the privyroom. When this boX is set down into the floor for the purpose of having the platform descendV to and rest upon the floor, suitable caps or coverings must be used' on the sides of the box or frame B, so as to close the slots or openings that are then necessary to bemade in the Hoor to accommodate the lower ends of the arms F F and levers J J.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent The vibratory seat A, having a curved frontpiece, C, and side pieces, c c, 'cover or screen D, having arms E E, hung to the arms FF, with friction-slidesff, and the swinging platform H, having levers J J, or their equivalents, when arranged together so as to operate substantially inthe manner and for the purpose described.
