Description

PHOT'OGAPHIG MoU-NT.
Patented Sept 8 1896.
UNITED l STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CLAYTON STONE HARRIS, OF PI^IILADELPIIIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TOIIVILLIS t OLEMENTS, OF SAME PLACE.
PHOTOGRAPHIC MOUNT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,134, dated September 8, 1896.
Serial No. 587,150. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAYTON STONE HARRIS, a citizen of theUnited States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Photographic Mounts, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object of my invention is to provide a photographic card-mount that will harmonize with a photograph mounted thereon; and a further object of the invention is to prepare the mount in such a manner that it will have a graduated tint, so as to bring out the photograph in a most artistic manner.
In the accompanying drawing, lthe ligure is a View of a card-mount made in accordance with my invention, the dotted line Within the mount indicating the line of the picture.
Heretofore in mounting photographs it has been customary to pay very little attention to the color of the mount, and the tone of the picture has not been taken into consideration in mounting the photograph.
My invention is applicable to mounting all photographs of any description, but is especially useful in mounting platinotypes having a gray tone or photographs having a sepia tone.
I rind that l can Inuch improve a photograph, for instance a platinotype, by mounting it on a card or mount having a gray tone corresponding to the tone of the photograph and making a heavy tint at the lower righthand corner, for instance, and gradually lighten the tint from this corner up to the upper left-hand corner, as shown in the accompanying drawing. This tintin g corresponds to the lighting of the picture, and it Will be understood that if the light is from the right-hand side of the picture instead of the left, then the tinting may be from the righthand upper corner to the left-hand lower corner, and in some instances the tinting may be from the upper edge of the mount to the lower edge.
If a photograph is to be mounted having a sepia tone, then the tint is to also have a sepia tone.
In carrying out my invention I take an ordinary paper that Will receive a Water-color and make a wash-tint over the entire surface of the sheet, gradually deepening the tone as it nears the bottom of the mount. The effect may be produced in some instances by lithography or other mechanical means.
I claim as my inventionl. A photographic picture mounted upon a tinted or colored card gradually deepening in shade from one portion to the other, substantially as described.
2. A photographic picture mounted upon a card harmonizing in tint with the tint of the photograph, the color or tint of said cardmount gradually deepening from the upper to the lower corner, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CLAYTON STONE HARRIS.
