WASHBOARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,890, dated. September 1, 1896.

Be it known that we, JAMES ALBERT CAR- ROLL and GUsrAvE CARLSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Valentine, in the county of Cherry and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to washboards, and the object thereof is to provide a washboard having a central longitudinal cavity or chamber in which is placed a screen of perforated material or wire mesh, which is adapted to support a bar or bars of soap, the face of the board being also perforated above and below said screen, whereby a circulation of water therethrough is produced.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of a washboard made according to our invention; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section thereof on the line 2 2, and Fig. 3 a plan view.

In the practice of our invention we provide a washboard comprising the sides A, the face or front B, and a back C, which extends to the top of the board and downwardly about one-half (%)of the length thereof, and the lower end of which is curved inwardly and connected with the face or front, as shown at D. By means of this construction a chamber E is formed, and placed therein, at about the middle thereof, is a downwardly-curved transverse screen F, which is connected with the back C and with the face or front D, and said face or front is provided with the usual transverse corrugations, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

At a predetermined point above the screen F the face or front B is provided with a transverse row of perforations, as shown at G, and near the bottom of the chamber E said face or front is provided with another transverse row of perforations K.

The lower end M of the board is placed within a tub or other receptacle in the usual manner, and the clothes or other articles to be washed are rubbed upon the corrugated face or front.

It will be understood that the tub or other receptacle is partially filled with water, and in the above-described operation there is a constant circulation of water through the perforations G and downwardly through the chamber E and the screen F and out at the perforations K; and by means of this circulation the requisite amount of soap is dissolved and carried through the perforations K upon the clothes or other articles, and by means of this construction the necessity of handling the soap is avoided.

Our improved washboard is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, while being comparatively inexpensive; and our invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts herein described, and we reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A washboard provided with the usual corrugated front, a chamber which extends from the top downwardly, said chamber being open at the top, and closed at the bottom, and being also provided with a perforated screen about midway thereof, and said front being provided with perforations above and below said screen, the perforations below the screen being at, or near the bottom of the chamber, substantially as shown and described.
