Be it known that I, GorTHILnF. WILHELM, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Muis, of which the follo\v ing is a specication.

Thisinventionhas reference to an improvement in muis whereby, in place of the ordinary straight cylindrical muffs, a muf having circumferential ribs or corrugations is produced, in which the middle portions of the skins, which show in many cases darker portions than the side portions, is used for the ribs, so that as the lighter side portions are drawn in at the grooves between the corrugations a more attractive muii is obtained, which brings out the beauty of the skins ernployed to greater advantage than the ordinary muffs heretofore in use.

The invention consists of a muli which is provided with an interior cylindrical down bed, down ribs or bands that encircle the down bed, and a fur covering from as many corrugated pieces of skin as there are ribs to be made, the sections of the fur covering being drawn in and connected at the grooves or corners between the corrugations, while the outer ends are drawn in and over the down bed, where they are connected by suitable stays, so as to prevent the extending of the interior to its full length, as will be fully described and then claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my muri. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the inufi", taken ou line 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the muff on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4C is a side elevation of the form on which the exterior covering 'is stretched into shape, and Fig. 5 is an end elevation thereof.

My improved muff consists of three main parts, an interior cylindrical down bed A, down ribs or bands B, encircling saidinterior bed, and a corrugated fur covering C, that extends over the down ribs and is drawn inwardly into the ends and attached to the down bed, as shown in Fig. 2. The fur covering is formed of pieces of fur of the required length to pass around and cover the circumference of the mud, which pieces are arranged in as many sections as ribs or corrugations aro to be formed on the inuff and stretched into shape, after sewing the sections of the mud together, on a sectional block D, which is shown in Figs. 4: and 5.

The block D is composed of a number of pieces, so that when the center piece or key d is removed the remaining sections can be readily withdrawn from the fur covering C. In shaping the fur covering C the same is turned inside out ai'ter the parts are sewed together at their edges, thoroughly moistened, and then placed over the sectional form D, which shows the same corrugations on its outside that are to be produced in the muif. The contracted portions of the fur covering are tied around the form by means of strings, and afterward the fur covering is permitted to dry on the block by subjecting it either to artificial heat or natural heat until dry. After the l'ur covering is perfectly dry itis removed from the sectional form by taking out the center piece or key CZ and removing one section after the other. The fur covering then retains its shape and can be reversed, so that the fur is on the outside, after which the down bed and ribs are inserted and the ends C are drawn in and attached to the down bed, after which a suitable silk lining L is attached, as usual in mufis.

The drawn-in ends of the fur covering C are connected by the longitudinal stays E, so as to prevent the extension or outward displacement of the fur covering under the strain applied to the mutt when using and handling the same.

By the construction described a muff is obtained that is formed with three or more cor rugations or ribs, which can be made of suitable fur, but which are most effective when made of urs in which the darker center portion of the skin forms a dark middle portion of each section or corrugation of the mutt, so that there will be an attractive appearance imparted to the Inu-EE. The construction of the mutt permits the use of large pieces of fur, as the side portions are drawn into the corners or joints of the corrugations, which side portions in the ordinary cylindrical muffs have to be cut oil', as only thc best parts of the skins can be used. This Inuit', though requiring the same skin-surface, can still be ICO made at about the same expense as the ordi@ nary mu, presenting a more attractive and characteristic appearance, and matching especially the ribbed capes which are at present formed of a corresponding number of corrugated sections corresponding to the number of down ribs, such sections'V being connected in the spaces between' said ribs, the outer ends of the fur covering being provided with inwardly-drawn sections that are attached to the ends of the down bed, stays connecting the inwardly-drawn ends of the fur covering, and a lining extending over the inner surface of the down bed, and the edges of the drawnin ends, substantially as set forth.
