JOHN APPLETON, OF MODESTO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGXOR OF TlVO-THIRDS TO JAMES XVHITAKER AND JAMES H. N. \VILLIAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
PLUMB=-LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,555, dated August 25, 1896. Application filed June l, 1895. Serial No. 551,701. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J onn APPLETON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Modesto, in the county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Levels and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of plumb-levels which embody a plumb pivoted at an intermediate point of its length and means for holding the plumb at various angles of inclination and its novelty and advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved level. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line a; x of Fig. 1.
In said drawings similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views, referring to which A indicates the body or bar of the level, which is provided in one side with a recess.
13 indicates a metallic box or casing which is arranged in the recess of the body or bar and has a circular opening and also has its upper wall depressed, as indicated by a, and provided with an opening I) for a purpose presently described.
C indicates a dial-plate which covers the opening in the box or casing 13, and has the curvilinear graduated slot D.
G indicates a screw which takes through the body-bar A and the back wall of the casing 13 and serves to secure said casing in the body-bar.
ll indicates a shaft which has its ends pointed and journaled in the end of the screw G, as indicated by G, and in the plate 0, as indicated by O, and J indicates a pendulum which is formed integral with or connected to the shaft H at an intermediate point of its length, as shown. This pendulum J, at its lower end, carries a weight I, having a pointer K, which extends through the slot D, as shown, and at its upper end said pendulum 5 5 has connected to it a segment L, which is also connected adjacent to its ends to arms M, extending laterally from the pendulum, as shown. The segment L is of a greater width than the pendulum to afford a broad surface, as shown, and it is designed to be engaged by the pin N. (Better illustrated in Fig. 3.) Said pin N extends through the aperture 1) in the upper wall of the casing B, and at its lower end ithas a cushion 0, adapted to bear upon the segment L, while at its upper end it has a head R, which normally rests within an opening S in the upper side of the bar A and flush with the upper side of said bar,as illustrated. The pin N is returned to and nor- 7o mally held in the position shown by the coiled spring P, which is interposed between the pinhead and the depressed portion a of the easingB. hen it is desired to hold the pendulum J at any angle of inclination, it is simply necessary for the operator to push the pin down so as to press and hold the cushion 0 against the segment L, when the pendulum Will be securely held against resuming its normal perpendicular position.
My improved level is operated in the usual manner, that is to say, the body-bar A is placed on the object to be leveled, when the pointer K will, by reason of gravity, indicate the horizontality of the object.
To determine the verticality of an object, the body A is placed in an upright position alongside the object and against the same, when the pointer K will indicate whether or no the object is vertical or inclined.
A pin F is inserted in the face of plate G, directly opposite the pivot-hearing C, said pin being adapted to facilitate the use of a square in obtaining desired angles.
It will be seen that while cheap and simple 5 my improved level is reliable in operation, which is a desideratum.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The plumb-level of the class described con- Ioo sisting essentially of the body-bar A, having the recess in one of its sides and the opening S, in the top Wall of said recess, the casing 13, arranged in said recess and having its upper Wall depressed as indicated by a, and provided with an aperture 1), the dial-plate having a curvilinear, graduated slot, the pendulum carried by a shaft journaled in the easing 13, and having the Weight I, and pointer K, at its lower end, the segment L, of greater width than the pendulum connected to the upper end thereof, the pin N, extending through the aperture Z), in case B, and having the cushion O, at its lower end and the head It, at its upper end and the coiled spring surrounding said pin and interposed between the pin-head and the depressed portion a, or 15 JOHN APPLETOX.
