Description

v "UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY TRUMBULL, OF CENTRAL COLLEGE, OHIO.
IMPRovED isreooivia-IEAD Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,640, dated J nly 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HARVEY TRUMBULL, of Central College, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Heads; and 1 hereby declare| that the followingis a true, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference contained therein.
The nature of my invention consists in certain mechanical devices forholdin g broom-corn in position.
In the drawings annexed, Figure l represents a plan view of my broom. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clamp for holding the broomcorn.
The letter A, Fig. 2, represents the lower jaw of the clamp, and is made solid with the screw Z1. The jaw A has a ange at each end, extending upward, for the purpose of receiving corresponding ilanges on the upper jaw, O. The jaws A and G forni the clamp, as seen in Fig. 2.
` The jaw O has a hole through its center sufficiently large to admit of the screw b, when inserted in said hole, to play freely.
Immediately above the jaw C is the nut d, which works on the screw b, and is designed to pressV down on jaw O and hold it rmly in position after the heads ofthe broorncorn have been inserted between C and A.
Above the nut d. is placed the ferrule or metal band E. The i'errule E is made solid at bottom, with a hole in its center, into which the screw b is lnade to work. The screw b eX- tends upward about halt' the length ofthe ferrule E, and the lower end of the broom-handle, being inserted in it, is screwed downward until it rests against the bottom of E.
It will be seen that when the ends of the broom-corn are placed between the jaws A and v(D, the nut d screwed downward so as to press H. TRUMBULL.
