U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' GEORGE YELLOTT, OF TOWSON, MARYLAND.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,112, dated. August 18, 1896.
Application filed October 9, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE YELLOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Towson, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to gates, and the object thereof is to provide a gate having a hinged horizontal section at the bottom thereof, which is adapted to be folded, so as to form a space between the bottom of the gate and the ground, or to be lowered, so as to close said space, and the object of this construction is to provide means whereby the gate may be operated or opened and closed when the ground is covered with snow or with sleet and ice, which'often packs beneath the gate, so as to prevent the operation thereof.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, and which represents a perspective view of my improved gate.
In the drawing forming part of this application, A and B represent ordinary gate-posts, and in the practice of my invention I provide a gate comprising a bottom plate or bar 0 and a top plate or bar D, each of which extend from one post to the other and each of which is hinged to one of the posts, as at E, and these plates or bars are united by means of vertical rods or pickets F, which pass therethrough or are connected therewith in any desired manner, and the end of the gate opposite to the hinges E is provided with a vertical angle-iron G, which is adapted to inclose one corner of the post B and to be secured thereto by means of a plug or pin connected with a chain H, said plug being not shown, but being adapted to be passed through a hole in said angle-iron and into the said post.
To the bottom plate or bar 0 of the gate I hinge a supplemental plate or bar K, which extends the full length of the gate, and secured to the bottom thereof are a number of pins or pickets L, which project downwardly and which correspond in number and arrangement with the pins or pickets F, and secured to the plate or bar K, and preferably centrally Serial No. 565,112. (No model.)
thereof, is a segmental attachment M, which projects outwardly and which is adapted to be passed through a slot formed in the end of a bar N, secured to the plate or bar K, and transversely thereof, and the segmental attachment M is provided with circular openings or holes, through which may be passed a pin connected with the chain 0, and by means of which the segmental attachment M, together with the hinged plate or bar K, may be locked in an open or in a closed position.
The open position of the plate or bar K is shown in dotted lines, and when in thisposition the short pickets or pins L will project in a horizontal line at one side of the gate, and when in this position, as will be understood, the gate may be opened and closed regardless of the snow or the sleet and ice at the bottom thereof, and, whenever desired, the pins or pickets L may be lowered into the vertical position, as shown in full lines, by depressing the segmental attachment M into the position shown in the drawing and looking it in said position.
My invention is not limited to the exact form of gate shown and described, or to the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with the bottom of a gate of a supplemental plate or bar hinged thereto and provided with downwardly-projected pins or pickets, said bar having a segmental bar or attachment operating in connection with the bar N, upon the bottom of the gate,Whereby said parts may be locked together by means of a pin passing therethrough, so as to open or close the space at the bottom of the gate, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 5th day of October, 1895.
GEORGE YELLOTT.
