PATENT OFFICE.
CAROLINE VON STAMMER, OF NEl/V YORK, N. Y.
BAN DAG E.
SPEGIFIGATIO'N forming part of Letters Patent N0. 565,700, dated. August 11 189 6.
Appllcation fi1ed Septemljer 16, 1895. erial N0. 562,681. (Spebimens.)
T0 all whom may concern:
Be lt known thauI, CAROLINE VON STAM- MER, a eitizen of the German Empire, residing in the eity, eounty, and Staoe of New York, have invented eertain new ancl useful Improvements in Abdominal Supporters, of whieh the following is a specification.
This invenuion relates t0 eertain improvements in abdominal supporters, by whieh the weight of the aloclomen is supported partly at the lower er small paro of the back, partly 011 the hips, a11d partly 011 the shoulders, by inclependent back and. hip fastening devioes, so as o0 be especially adapted forfleshy women and women who have to (10 manual Werk; and ul1e invent-ion eonsiscs of an abdominal supporter eomposed of an inwardlywurved ancl tapering lower freut portion and an upper 01 Walst portion eonnected thereto ab its freut part, and a1; slight inward inelination, so as to give fullness to the fronu portion, while tl1e rear part 0f he lower front portion is separated from the rear part of the upper 01 waist portion, eaeh being proviclecl with indepenclent fastening clevioes, so thab by the indepenclent adjustmen of the upper and lower portions a better and tighter fit of the abclominal supporer is obtained, while in conneeuion With thigh-straps and suspenders a comfortable wear of the supporter is 0bainecl.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represens a perspective freut view 0f my improved ablominal supporter, and Fig. 2 is'a perspeotive rear vieW 0f nhe same.
Similar let1sers of referenee indicate eorresponcling pars.
Referring to ohe drawings. A represents the lower inwarclly-eurved ancl tapering freut portion of my abdominal supporter, whieh is providecl With the usual stays a for imparting the required degree 0f stiffness thereto. T0 tl1e upper edge of the lower freut portion A 1's attaehecl 1;]1e upper o1 waist portion B,whieh is conneeted ab an obtuse angle Wih the lower freut portion A, so as 130 imparfi a eertain fullness to 1:he front part of ehe supporter. The lower front portion A is eonneeted Witl1 its rear pa1t A, tha1; is likewise provided with reinforeing-stays, by fastening-straps and buekles, elasuio eorcls, laeing-strings, 01 other suitalole fastening cleviees a, so tl1at tl1e 'lower fronb portion A ancl the rear part A of the supporter ean be readily.appliecl to the abdomen ancl the 1ower part 01 small of tl1e back and fitted snugly thereto.
The upper p0rt-i0n B of the abdominal supporter has 110 reinforeing-stays anclis ex tended in baekward .direetion, 1zhe backwarclly-extending bancls 01 straps B being separated from the rear part A of the lower freut portion A ancl pr0vided Wit-h inclependenb fastening deviees b, so that saicl rear straps B ean be passecl over the hlps ancl firmly appliecl 110 the waist 0f the bocly in he nature of a waistband.
The independent fastening deviees l) of the upper rear straps B 0f he waist portion B and ehe fastening cleviees of the rear part A wioh the lower freut portion A forma Ehe esse'ntial feaure of my improvecl supporter, as thereloy the abdomen is not only firmly ancl tightly supported, but also the movements of the bocly, espeeially in bending or snooping when performing manual labor, are great-ly faeilitated, as tl1e rear part A, ancl straps B of tl1e supporter are enabled t-0 separate more 0x less from each other without exerting a pulling 01' straining aeoion on either par. The upper portion B is provided with suspenclers O whenever 111 is clesired to transfer uhe weight of nhe abclomen '00 the shoulclers, and the lower front portion A wit-h thighstraps Dby which the front portion of the supporter is prevented from shifting above the abdomen. A strap E, extending f1rom the lower fron portion A to its rear parn A, serves as a support for the napkin. These feaoures, however, suspenders ancl thighstraps, are well known and forrn no parb of t-l1is invention.
My supporter may also loe proviclecl with various accessory deviees, such as cuslnioningpacls below the fastening deviees a, by which tl1e frono portion A is eonneeted winh 1zhe real portion A, and a pad ab the freut portion for holdingthenavel in position in ease 0f an umbilical hernia; but these are optional and may be clispensed With when not requ ired.
Havingthus deseribecl my invention, I elaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. An abdominal supporter, eonsisting of a lower inwardlyeurved and taperingfront porti0n A, a rear part A, fastening deviees a oonnecoing the rear par1s with the 10wer front portion, an upper 01' waist portion B directly eonneeted ab its 10fier edge aeross the front of the supporter With the lower front portion, and provided Wih rearwardly extending straps B, said straps being disconnected from the rear part 0f the Iower front portion, and independent fastening devices b f0r the rear -straps, substantially as set forth.
2. An abdominal supporter, composed of a lower inward1 y-curved and tapering fron portion A provided with reinforeing-stays, a real part A, fastening devices conneetin g the rear part with the lower front portion, an upper
