SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,118, dated August 4, 1896.
Application filed April 13, 1896. Serial No. 587,335. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH J. MITOHELL, a resident of J enkintown', in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in windows and more particularly to such in which the sashes are adapted to move vertically and also swing on hinges, the object of `the invention being to provide simple and efficient means whereby one edge of the sash can be automatically released from the sashcord when said sash is swung, open said deviccs also acting automatically to attach the free edge of the sash to the cord when the sash is closed.
A further object is to so construct and mount a sliding and swinging sash that the hinges will be concealed from view.
A further object is to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient stop and bottom support for the sash or sashes.
A further object is to provide sliding and swinging sashes with inprovements which shall be simple in Construction, easy to operate, and which shall be efiectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
With these objectsin View the inventon consists in certain novel features of Construction and combinations and arrangements of parts,as hereinaftcr set fol-th, and pointed ont in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a window frame and sashes, showing the application of my improvements th ereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View. Figs. 3 and at are horizontal cross-sections, and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views.
A represents a window-iframe having the usual weight-boxes andpulleys for the accommodation of the weighted cords 1 which counterbalance the sashes B C, each sash being adapted to be hinged at one edge and having a sash-Gerd detachably connected with its other edge.
The inner sash B is preferably attached to the window-frane when in its normal position by means of hinges B'. Each hinge B' comprises an open eye or hook 2, attached to the window-frame, and a curved plate 3, attached to the sash, said curved' plate having an enlarged portion 4: at its free edge to be engaged by the eye or hook 2 and a slot or opening 5 in rear of said enlarged portion for the reception of said eye or hook when the sash is swung open. By thus constructing the hinges B' and attaching them to the Window-frame and sash they will be concealed from View by the head 6 and the sash can be swung open around the bead.
To permit the sash B to be raised and lowered, the inner face of the head G is made with a groove 7 for the acconmodation of the hinge, and when the sash is raised or lowered the part of the hinge attached to the sash will move freely in said groove '7.
The hinge B' may be made of cast metal or of sheet metal, as desired. The hinges C', by which the sash C is adapted to be hinged to the parting-rail S, maybe constructed in the same Inanner as above described, but in the drawings I have shown said hinges C' constructed of sheet metal. The part-ing-rail S is made with an enter beveled face 9, to which the eyes or hooks of the hinges are attached, so that said sash C can be swung open without engaging orbinding against said head.
It will be seen that when the sashes are moved up and down the portions of the hin ges attached thereto will ride freely into or out of engagement with the parts of said hinges which are attached to the window-france. In order to permit the sash B to be swung on its hinges the lower portion 10 of the bead 11 is hinged to the window-hame, so that it can be turned back out of the way of the free edge of said sash.
Any suitable form of hinges may be employed for connecting the portion 10 of the head to the frame A.
For the purpose of permitting the outer sash C to be swung onits hinges, the lower portion 12 of the parting-bead 13 is hinged so that it can be turned back out of the way of the free edge of the sash C when the latter is lowered.
Sash-cords 14: are permanently attached to the hinged edge of the sashes, but the cords IOO lower ends of the plates 18, the latter being' Secured to the window-frame and made to project over the grooves 15. The free edge of each sash is recessed for the reception of a slotted plate 19, having a beveled lip 20, the upper and lower beveled faces 21 22 of which serve as guides for conducting the pin or arm 17 properly to the slot or socket 23 in said plate 19.
WVhen the sash is lowered and the hinged bead turned back from the free edge thereof, the sash can be swung open on its hinged edge, as above explained, and when it is being Lhus swung on its hinges the lip 20 of the plate 19 will engage the pin or arm 17 and cause it to project under the lower end of the plate 18, and thus the weighted sash-cord 1 is automatically detached from the free edge of the sash and connected with 'the windowframe in position to again receive the sash When the latter is closed.
When the sash is swun g back to its normal position, the free end of the pin or arm 17 will enter the slot or socket in the plate 19 and be pushed by the wall 2& of said slot or socket out of engagement with the plate 18, thns automatically attaching the sash-cord 1 to the sash.
In order to insure the proper alinement of the arm or pin 17 with the slotted or socketed plate 19, a hinged stop 25 is attached to the sill of the window-frame and adapted to be moved longitudinally, so as to enter a recess 26 in the bottom rail or bead 27, whereby to retain said stop in proper position. The stop 25 may be Conveniently made of an ordinary' butt-hinge and serves not only as a stop but also to sustain the weight of the sashes when the latter are lowered, and thus takes all weight of the sashes off of the hinges when the sashes are swung open.
My improvements are very simple in con'- struction, comprise few parts, are cheap to inanufacture, not liable to get out of order,
are neat in appearance, and are effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
Various slght changes might be made in the details of Construction without departing from the spirit of my invention or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a windowsash hinged at one edge and a sash-cord, of devices constructed and adapted to automatically detach said s'ash-cord from and attach it to the sash and operated by turning the latter on its hinges, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination With a vertically-sliding sash and a sash-cord, of means for hinging said sash when the latter is lowered and means constructed and adapted to automatically detach said sash-cord from or attach it to the sash and op'erated by turning the latter, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a sash hinged at one edge, and a sash-cord, of an arm or pin projecting from the free end of said cord, a device on the sash to receive said arm or pin and a plate or catch on the window-frame. said device on the sash being so construeted and arranged that when said sash is swung open, it will move the arin or pin in engagement with the plate or catch on the 'windowframe and when the sash is closed said device thereon will move the arm or pin on the sashcorcl out of contact with said plate and attach it to the sash, substantially as set forth.
4:. The combination with a vertically-movable sash hinged at one edge, and a sash-cord` of means for automatically detaching said sash-cord from and attaching it to the sash when the sash is turned on the hinge, and a stop to limit the downward movement of the sash, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a wndow-frame` a x 'ertically-movable sash hinged thereto and a sash-cord, of a lateral arm or' pin at the free end of said cord, a plate Secured to the frame and adapted to be engaged by said arm or pin, and a socketed plate Secured to the free edge of the sash and adapted, when the sash is swung on its hinges, to move said arm or pin out of engagement with the sash and into engagement with the plate on the windowframe, or vice versa, aecordingly as the sash is swung open or closed, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a sash hinged at one edge and a sash=cord, of an arm or pin projecting laterally from the free end of said cord, a plate secured to the window-frame` to be engaged by said arm or pin, and a socketed plate Secured to the free edge of the sash. said plate having a beveled lip and beveled faces above and below said lip, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with a sash hinged at one edge to a window-frame, and a sash-cord` of a sleeve at the free end of said cord, an arm or pin projecting laterally from said sleeve, a socketed plate on the free edge of the sash adapted to receive said arm or pin, said plate having a lip, and a catch on the window-frame to receive said arm or pin when the sash is swung open, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination with a window-frame. and a sash hinged at one edge to the frane, of a hinged device attached to the frame at the bottom of the horizontal groove in the lat- IOO ter, and adapted to be SW nng Upward to a Vertical position to form a stop for the sash and sustain its weight when the latter is swung open, whereby to take the weight of the sash oh" of its hinges, substantially'as set forth.
9. The combination with a window-frame and a vertically-movable sash hinged at one edge to the window-hame, of a sash-Gerd, an arm or pin at the free end of said cord, a plate Secured to the frame and acting as a catch for said arm 01' pin, a socketed plate Secured to the sash and adapted to receive said arm or pin, and a hinged stop to limit the downward movement of the sash whereby to insu-e the alinement of the socketed plate on the sash with the arm 01' pin on the eo'd, substantially as set forth.
10. The eombination With a window-frame and a vertieally-movable sash hinged at one edge to the frame, of a hin ged device attached to the sill of the f'ame and serving as a stop for the sash and also to sustain the weight thereof when lowered, one member of said hinged device having a longitudinal movement and adapted to enter a notch or reeess in the bottom head of the frame, substantial] y as set forth.
11. The conbinaton with aWindow-frame, a parting-bead having a beveled face and a vertically-movable sash, of hinges for conneeting said sash with said head when the sash is lowered, each hinge eomprsing an open eye 01- hook Secured to the heveled face of the head and a cu-Ved plate havin g a slot and an enla'ged edge, Secured to the sash, substantially as set forth.
12. The combination with a Window-treme having grooves in one edge thereof, a vertically-movable sash hinged at one edge to the window-frane and a. sash-comi, of a sleeve Secured to the free end of said eord and adapted to move in said groove in the frame, an arm 01* pin projecting laterally from said sleeve, a plate Secured to the frame and adapted to project over said groove, and a de- Vice on the sash adapted to engage said arm or pin, whereby when the sash is swung in one direction the arin or pin will be moved in contact with said plate and when the sash is swung in the other direction said arm 01' pin will be moved out of engagement with said plate and he attached to the sash, substantially as set forth. 4
