A. G. SGARR. CAN OPENER.
No. 665,094. Patented Aug. 4, 1-896.
WITNESSES. HVVENTUH I 6 2W C %J%,J I ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ ABRAHAM CALVERT SOARR, OF HARRISTON, CAYADA.
CAN-OPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,094, dated August 4, 1896.
Application filed December 4, 1895. Serial No. 571,019. (No model.) I
To osZZ 1071 0111, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM CALVERT SCARR, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a resident of I-Iarriston, in the Province of Ontario,Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to devices for opening cans; and the object thereof is to provide an effective device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, and which represents a perspective view of my improved canopener.
In the practice of my invention I provide a base-plate A, which may be of any desired form, and which is preferably provided with a handle a, and to the base-plate A, I preferably secure a supplemental plate 13, in the front side of which is formed a segmental or semicircular cavity or recess 6. It will be understood, however, that the plates 13 and A may be formed integral, if desired, or but one plate employed.
Secured to the base-plate A, at each side thereof, are vertical brackets 0, provided with top or cross bars D, through which pass vertical. side bars E- of a frame or support F, which comprises vertical side bars E and the top cross-bar G.
Mounted upon the vertical side bars E of said support or frame F is a sliding cross-head H, to which is secured a lever K, the outer end of which is connected at L with a vertical support M, composed of a rod bent to form the two sides m, the lower ends of which are secured to the cross-plate and the upper yokeshaped portion of which is pivotally connected with the lever K at L.
. Secured to the sliding cross-head H is a blade or cutter N, the lower corners of which are cut away, so as to form. a point a, and said point and the inclined sides n adjacent thereto are sharp or provided with cutting edges.
The support M of the outer end of the lever 5 5 K is composed of a spring-rod, and the top thereof is adapted to move back and forth in the operation of the lever K; or said support may be pivotally connected with the basepla-te A, and also with a lever K, in which event it need not be formed of spring metal.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
The can to be opened is placed upon the base-plate A and shoved back until it rests in the semicircular or segmental cavity or recess b, and the lever K is then depressed, so as to force downwardly the sliding cross-head H and the knife or blade N, connected therewith, in which operation the point it of said blade enters the head of the can adjacent to one side thereof.
It will be observed that the sides n of the blade are curved outwardly, this formation being for the purpose of adapting the cutter or blade to the form of the can, and when the point a is forced into or through the head of the can adjacent to the side thereof the cutting edges or sides n will pass through and around said head and, as will be understood,
cut or separate the same from the sides of the can, and it will thus be observed that by turning the can the entire head or any desired portion thereof may be cut out.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a can-opener of the character described of a base-plate A, which is provided with a tapered handle a, a supplemental plate B secured to said base-plate at the end opposite to the handle, the front of said plate B, being cut away to form a semicircular cavity b,vertical brackets C, provided with a cross-bar D, vertical. side bars E with the operation of they lever, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 30th day of November, 1895.
ABRAHAM CALVERT SOARR.
