SPRINKLING-NOZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,906, dated July 28, 1896.
Application filed November 9, 1895. Serial No. 568,474. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. VAN CAMP, a citizen of the United States, residingin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in sprinkling-Nozzles, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to construct a sprinkling or spraying nozzle whereby the stream of water or other liquid will be broken up and widely spread in the form of a thin sheet or spray, a further object being to control the extent and direction of the discharge as may be desired. These objects I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a lawn sprinkler having a sprinkling or spraying nozzle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of difierent forms of spraying-tongues which may be used.
A represents a casin g, which may be of any desired size, shape, or configuration, said casing having at the base a threaded opening a for the reception of a nipple or coupling upon the hose or other pipe,'whereby the supply of water is conveyed to the sprinkler.
The casing A is preferably inclined upwardly from the receiving end a, being supported in this inclined position by suit-able legs or props b, and in the casing is an upwardly inclined passage d, reduced in diameter at the upper end, as shown at cl, so as to project into a chamber B at the upper end of the casing a forcible jet of water.
Hung to a pivot'pin f, which crosses the chamber 13, is a tongue D, terminating at the outer end in a pair of curved and outwardlyflaring wings g, as shown in Fig. 2, the pivotpin 3 being located directly in line with the jet issuing from the contracted orifice d and being so disposed in respect to the tongue D that the greater portion of the length of the latter is outwardly beyond the pivot. The
effect of this construction is that when the tongue is exposed to the action of the jet a rapid and constant vibration of the same in the chamber B results and the water issuing from the mouth of the chamber B is spread laterally in the form of a thin sheet or spray, the mouth of the chamber B being widened to permit of the swinging movement of the tongue, which is caused by the constant shifting of the preponderating force of the jet from one side of the tongue to the other, for when the tongue reaches an inclinedposition, which causes the exercise of greater force upon one side than upon the other, it is thereby forced to the opposite inclined position, and the force of the jet being thus shifted it is at once forced back again and the vibrations are thus constantly kept up.
It might be thought that the tongue D would assume a central position, so as to evenly divide the jet and be thereby retained fixedly in this central position, but this is simply a theoretical possibility, and never results in practice.
The direction of the sheet or spray issuing from the sprinkler may, in great measure, be governed by the shape of the flaring wings g of the tongue. For instance, if the said wings are of the full width of the tongue and practically fill the chamber B from top to bottom, the sheet or spray will be thrown laterally in both directions, and but little, if any, will be projected directly in front of the sprinkler, but if the flaring wings are reduced at top and bottom, as shown, for instance, at 11 in Fig. 1, some of the water will escape above and be low said wings and will be projected directly forward, while if the wings have central slots formed in them, as shown, for instance, at m m in Fig. 4, the volume of water projected directly forward may be caused to equal or exceed that which is thrown out laterally.
In carrying out my invention any desired form of casing for containing the vibrating tongue maybe used. For instance, instead of a structure such as I have shown, and which is adapted to rest upon the lawn, the casing vance of said jet-opening, the pivotal axis of the tongue being in the path of the jet issuing from the opening but extending transversely across the same, substantially as specified.

3. A spraying-nozzle having a j etopening therein and a pivoted tongue supported in advance of said jet-opening, the pivotal axis of the tongue being in the path-of the jet issuing from the opening but extending transversely across the same, said tongue being laterally flared at the outer end, substantially as specified.
4. A spraying-nozzle having a jet-opening therein and a pivoted tongue supported in advance of said jet-opening and laterally flared at the outer end, the pivotal axis of the tongue being in the path of the jet issuing from the opening but extending transversely across the same, and being nearer to the inner end of the tongue than to the outer end of the same, substantially as specified.

A spraying-nozzle consisting of a casing having at the base an opening for'the reception of the supply hose or pipe, and having also an upwardly-inclined passage terminating in a jet-opening, with a tongue pivoted in advance of said jet-opening and in line with the jet issuing therefrom, the pivotal axis of the tongue extending transversely across the jet, substantially as specified.
