To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE KINT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oelwein, in the county of Fayette and State of Iowa, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Founders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a clothes-pounder by the particular construction of which in operation it will thoroughly agitate the water to increase the amount of suds, and also act upon the clothes to force the water through them, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a clothes-pounder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

A designates a conical casing forming the body portion of the pounder and provided at its upper end with an extension or tapered tube a to receive the operating-handle A. At a suitable distance above the lower or larger end of the conical casing A, and fitting snugly therein, is a funnel-shaped diaphragm B, having a central opening 17, and below this diaphragm are secured a number of plates 0, which are first bent, so that when attached to the inner side of the casing and under side of the diaphragm they will form narrow compartments, each having a small outlet-opening 0 adjoining the lower edge of the casing A and also an elongated vertical opening at its inner end. The several plates 0 are arranged to provide a space between their inner ends to receive and form guides for a reciprocating valve D, said valve being provided with projecting arms cl, that play in the inner ends of the compartments formed by said plates and prevent the displacement of the valve.

It will be noted that the lower end or hottom-of the narrow compartments incline from their inner end downward, which, in connection with the configuration of the diaphragm B and flaring sides of said compartments, provide an enlarged space in said compartments adjoining the sides of the casing, so that in operation a greater quantity of Water will flow out of the outlet-openings c. The plates C also present ribs that act upon the clothes by contact therewith.

At the upper part of the conical casing A, above the diaphragm B, are a series of openings a, protected by shields e to prevent the clothes covering the same.

From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of the improved clothes-pounder will be apparent, for in the downward movement of the device the water will force the valve D upon its seat against the under side of the diaphragm to close the opening I), and the water will then fill the compartment formed by the plates 0, forcing out the air and agitating the water in the tub. Now upon the upward movement of the pounder the valve D will drop, and the air that is drawn by suction through the openings to into the compartment above the diaphragm will pass through the opening I) and allow the water to flow out of the openings 0 in a fine stream upon the clothes, such operation also preventin g any resistance to the movement of the device. The plates C present ribs, so that when the device is moved up and down said ribs will engage the clothes and aid in agitating the same.

It has been found in practice that by the par ticular construction of my improved clothespounder it is easily operated and presents a very efficient device for the purpose intended.

hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A clothes-pounder consisting of a conical casing A having a funnel-shaped diaphragm B, bent plates 0 secured within the casing below the diaphragm to provide narrow compartments having outlet-openings c, a space being left between the inner ends of said plates, and a valve located in said space and provided with arms that enter the compartments formed by the plates, the upper part of the conical casing having inlet-openings, substantially as shown and described.

2. A clothes-pounder consisting of a conical casing A having inlet-openings a and a funnel-shaped diaphragm B, bent plates 0 secured within the casing below the diaphragm to provide narrow compartments having flaring sides, inclined bottoms, and outlet-openings c; a space being left between the inner ends of said compartments below an opening GEORGE KINT.
